SIGNIFICANCE The Henfield House retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship in the survival of its chamfered First Period frame, planked walls, and early roof construction, making it eligible under The original gable-end clapboards preserved within the present attic repesent a rare survival of First Period exterior In addition, because the frame of the earliest section has the potential to yield further information about First Period building practices, making it eligible under Criterion D. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Henfield House is a five bay, 2 1/2 story central chimney structure with an integral rear lean-to raised in the 20th century to a shed dormer. The original (eastern) section was a half house 2 1/2 stories high with a lean-to and a chimney to the left (west). The west section was added some time in the early 18th century.
During the 20th century, a shed dormer was built on the sloping rear roof, and two one story additions were added on the east rear. The house is clapboarded, with a reconstructed cove cornice on the main facade and a Greek Revival doorway. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The east side of the house exhibits ca. 1700 chamfers and the original rafters and exterior clapboarding preserved within the present roof. In the first floor east room, all original woodwork is covered by later boxes and panels. The second floor east chamber has exposed transverse summer and end tie beams with bevel chamfers and lamb's tongue stops. The attic preserves substantial evidence of the original roof. Underneath the slope of the east part of the present shed dormer are the upper portions of principal rafters, collar beams, and vertical planking.
On the west side of the chimney, some of the vertical planks from the original gable wall survive in place. There are four original exterior clapboards still attached to the west face of the planks, under the peak. Abbot Loweli Cummings observed that cuts had been made in the front plate to allow for a plaster cove, and oversaw the reconstruction and installation of the cove cornice now on the building. SIGNIFICANT LATER FEATURES The post-1730 date of the west end of the house is clearly indicated by the unfinished condition of the now exposed longitudinal summer beam in the first floor room.
