SIGNIFICANCE The Edward Putnam Jr. House, despite the modern additions and restoration of the chimney top, retains its integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association.
Cin its plank frame, transverse first story binding beams, and restored chimney evidence which embody distinctive characteristics of uncommon patterns of First Period domestic construction while its original plan may be interpreted as a single cell with first floor end leanto kitchen Farm land in front subdivided for modern residential development. Fenced along Gregory Street and behind house and barns, with broad lawn and mature plantings in front. EXTERIOR DESCRIPIION Until modern restoration and additions, the Putnam HOuse was a one-room deep central chimney house of two stories and attic, with a single each story on the eastern half of the south facade, two on the western half of the facade, and a single window above the added (c. window at each story and the attic.
Until recently the brick chimney was capped by a narrow stack protruding at the ridge; during remodeling added for a new leanto and the chimney topped off with a new decorative brick pilaster on the front and heavy banding The 1963 leanto is broken by a two story gabled projecting bay behind the chimney, and is joined to a run of 19th century barns by a one story extension of the leanto from the west end. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The Edward Putnam, Jr. begun c. 1705 with the construction of the eastern end of the present house, including the chimney bay, of plank frame. During restoration of the west chamber, mortises for the corner braces of the original end wall were discovered, as was of the original plate and west plank wall that was later reused as the interior east wall of that chamber.
The earlier rooms are narrower transverse summer (binding) beams on the first floor and boxed transverse tie beam above. These are framed into tow story posts, originally with plain bevel chamfers terminating at the second story shoulder which was ehenpllar tevet chactend boxed. The large parlor eastern fireplace on the first floor has rounded jambs and a smoke panel. The western addition is also First Period, with transverse binding summer below and tie above; the first story frame is boxed as are the supporting posts, but the second story tie is decorated with a narrow bevel and plain taper stop and supports 11 butt-cogged joists 22" on centers. In this kitchen chamber all the plates, girts, and posts have similar late narrow chamfers and the posts flare at the second story. There is no fireplace in the second floor west chamber, although the west kitchen fireplace below is 10 1/2 feet between the square jambs and contains a smoke shelf and rear brick over. This suggests that if the chimney stack is original, the house may have had an end leanto that was replaced by the western two and one half story additions (ca.1718). The attic is composed of principal rafters with purlins now hidden by interior finish.
The cellar supports on center on the east; 23-24" on the west). HISTORICAL INFORMATION It is believed that the earliest core of the circa 17005 house was built by Edward Putnam, Jr.'s father. Putnam's father, a prominent deacon in the Salem Village church, deeded both his sons the land and houses they occupied in 1718, perhaps the date of the addition to the house as he and his first wife had ten children. The father and his namesake son were instrumental in founding the early ironworks in Middleton on Prout Pong Brook. REFERENCES 1.
