The front (west) elevation is dominated by a tall square three story tower topped by a steeple. The 'steeple roof is finished with slate as is the main gabled roof. Decorations on the tower row of corbelling underneath the tower eaves. The exterior walls are made of Indiana limestone and are trimmed with rows of sandstone belt courses. The recessed front entrance feature is supported by 2 granite columns topped by sandstone corinthian capitals. Above the with the construction date "1887." Other military motifs consist of a row of stars, shield-like stone medallions, two cannons within the balustrade and two limestone rifles draped in flags on each side of the double doors. The four corners of the chapel are highlighted by carved the same military decorations as seen on the front. There is no tower on the rear and the the style of a nineteenth century sailor.
The interior contains a marble floor. The walls feature Italian marble tablets inscribed with the names of more than 2800 men from Marion County who served in the American Revolution, War of 1812 and the Civil War. There are four pairs of stained glass windows each with the design of a shield inscribed with the word "Union", the initials U.S., and two swords. The limestone lintels that crown the stained glass windows list major battles of the tendrils intertwined with bullets. Each of the four wall sections feature a large carving: the north and south walls feature portraits of General Grant and President Lincoln while the east circular window with a clover design.

The Chapel is situated on a large lot surrounded by trees.The held open by free standing limestone door stops in the shape of cannon shell casings.The cast and west walls contain larger depictions of a soldier and sailor. The massive oak doors are limestone urns each draped in a wreath and shroud.
The rear elevation of the chapel repeats entrance is the stone figure of a soldier leaning on a rifle and standing on a stone pediment Vernon Heights Boulevard.The Harding Memorial is located nearby on the south side of Section number 7 Civil War in which Marion units took part.
