Simply designed, it was constructed in 1881 of red brick laid in a common-bond pattern, with a plain an off-center entry with a stone lintel; the door itself is modern, replacing a panel door that The Seville Jail was moved in 1995 from its original location at 46 Market Street, to save adjacent to the Seville Historical Society house museum, and faces south, whereas it formerly faced north before the move.
It rests on its original tooled sandstone block foundation, in a residential section just west of Seville's commercial district and less than 1/4 mile from its adjacent to the village depot (demolished), has been completely redeveloped for commercial use.The old Seville Jail is now the village's sole remaining public/governmental building Continuation Sheet building.Their location in the building is marked on the exterior by 21 iron anchors which National Register of Historic Places former location. Acreage of Property - (Explain why the boundaries were selected on a continuation sheet.) less than one United States Department of the Interior National Park Service Medina County, Ohio The Seville Jail is nominated under Criterion C as a significant example of a building type, a nineteenth century small village jail. The small village jail is a rare vestige of the to save it, the Seville Jail displays a high degree of integrity and is one of only two buildings of this type known to have survived in eastern Ohio. The Seville Jail was built in 1881 to answer a need in this small community (1880 "comfortably furnished in keeping with the requirements" of such a building (Beichler 1938). The dimensions of the jail were adequate for a town of Seville's size, and the building served until 1938.
A long-time resident of Seville was quoted as remembering that just before the buggy speeders, roisterers from LeRoy and Lodi and sometimes a wanted lightning rod salesman" (Kelly 1969). In 1938 an ordinance was enacted to stop the overnight free housing of transients in the jail; a total of 90 had been fed and lodged in the jail (village population was only 850) in the final month before it was closed (Beichler 1938). With the new thereafter were housed in the county facility at Medina.
Diminutive lockups such as Seville's were once common to many nineteenth century villages and towns, serving for the overnight detention of drunks, drummers, vagrants, and often in conjunction with sheriff's residences, the improvements to roads and transportation in the early twentieth century, and the costs associated with holding and feeding inmates, County, and one of only two known to survive in eastern Ohio (the other is in Freeport, lockups in Ohio are listed, and only two are included in the Ohio Historic Inventory (HAS- 1. In 1882 the Medina County sheriff reported only 28 prisoners for the entire year; perhaps the decision to build a local lockup was spurred by distance from Medina and lack of adequate space at the county jail to temporarily hold large numbers of minor offenders. 367-12, WAR-613-3).
