The Route No. 1 Overton-Lake Mead Road contributed significantly to National Park Service development of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area beginning in Station markers were established by the Bureau of Public Roads in prior to construction of the road as reference points for surveyors laying out the route, and permanent monuments were installed at these locations in Additional station markers were installed by the Federal Highway Administration along the route at an unknown date in preparation for reconstruction of Route No. 1. Report Prepared By: Kurt Schweigert Associated Cultural Resource Experts (ACRE) Littleton, Colorado Date: September ROUTE NO. 1 OVERTON-LAKE MEAD ROAD, STATION MARKERS (Northshore Road, Overton Beach Access Road) HAER No. NV-40-E Page2 I. Description Route No.
1 Overton-Lake Mead Road (Route No. 1) was constructed in to provide access to Overton Beach, a recreation facility within the Boulder Dam Recreation Area (now the Lake Mead National Recreation Area). The documented portion of Route No. 1 extends from Overton Beach southwestward and then northwestward about 6.2 miles to the boundary of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. II. Architecture and Engineering The documented segment of Route No. 1 includes 16 recorded station markers. Fifteen of the recorded station markers were installed by the Bureau of Public Roads as permanent markers in these 15 markers consist of steel pipes approximately in diameter with brass caps. Inscribed on the brass caps is "U.S. Dept.
of Agriculture, Bureau of Public Roads," "Please do not disturb," the station distance from the project beginning point at intervals (Station 001 would be from the beginning point), and the elevation above mean sea level. These 12 station markers vary in height up to about 8" above current ground level, but most are less than 4" above current ground level. The other recorded station marker was installed by the Central Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration at an unknown date. This marker is a metal cap inserted in poured concrete near ground level; the cap is inscribed "Federal Highway Admin., Denver, Colo.," above an indented plumb bob reference point in a triangle, and Recorded Station Markers on Route No. 1 Overton-Lake Mead Road Feature UTM UTM No.

History The 13 recorded station markers along the documented segment of Route No. 1 were installed either by a contractor for the Bureau of Public Roads in or by the Federal Highway Administration at an unknown date. The original station markers are indicated on as-built drawings of Route No. 1 (National Park Service Construction of Route No. 1 is extensively discussed in the Historical Data section ofHAER-NV-40. Project Information This documentation has been prepared at the request of the National Park Service, Lake Mead National Recreation Area. In NPS and the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office (NV-SHPO) agreed that repair or maintenance could adversely affect historic drainage structures along Route No. 1.
A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between NPS and NV-SHPO stipulated that HAER documentation would be accomplished for features along Route No. 1 prior to reconstruction of the road. This HAER documentation partially fulfills requirements of the MOA. This documentation was accomplished by Associated Cultural Resource Experts (ACRE) under provisions of a task order issued by the National Park Service to Scientific Applications International Corporation (SAIC). Kurt P. Schweigert of ACRE was Principal Investigator and prepared the second draft and final documentation packages. Douglas M. Edwards and Kurt P. Schweigert of ACRE were the photographers, and Peggy Beedle of ACRE accomplished most of the research and initial field documentation. Melissa Johnson of ACRE assisted in field ROUTE NO.
