Moderate flooding occurred along the West Branch Delaware River near Walton, NY. The river gauge located near Walton recorded at crest of 14.40 feet at 6:00 AM on September 8, 2011.
Very intense winds from a thunderstorm caused significant straight-line wind damage along the Route 10 corridor from Walton to Delhi. Most of the damage in this corridor resulted from estimated winds of 60 to 70 mph. The hardest hit area was near Delhi on Back River Road near a 4H camp where hundreds of trees were snapped off or uprooted in a half mile wide long path and one quarter mile wide width. At the 4-H camp Shankitunk, four cabins were crushed by falling trees. Fortunately, nobody was injured as camp officials heeded warnings and moved everyone to safe shelter. Winds in this area were estimated between 80 and 90 mph. There was also significant straight-line wind damage up to 70 mph close to Walton a East River Road where numerous trees were uprooted or snapped off. In Walton, a roof was torn off a building. The metal roof pieces fell onto wires and Route 10. The Village of Delhi also had many large trees uprooted or snapped off, some of which landed on homes, buildings, and cars. On Route 10 in Delhi, a greenhouse was lifted and tossed onto the roof a barn. 10,000 electric customers lost power, many for more than 24 hours. In Hancock a state of emergency was declared due to fallen trees and wires. 14 houses were damaged.
Several roads were affected by flooding. Water covered the southbound lanes of Route 10 just south of Walton. In Sidney Center, Route 35 was closed, and route 27 between Trout Creek and Sidney Center was closed. Depot Street was completely underwater. In Youngs, people were evacuated near Carrs Creek.
Strong thunderstorm winds knocked down numerous trees and poles throughout Walton. A few trees landed on houses. The local fire department was blocked by downed poles.
Thunderstorm winds blew trees and wires down in Walton and Delhi. In Walton, a roof came off a building landing on Highway 10. Trees fell down on Arbor Hill Road south of Delhi and on County Highway 10 north of Delancey.
