“Amsterdam Castle, also known as the Amsterdam Armory, located at 49 Florida Avenue at the intersection with Dewitt Street in Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York was built in 1895 by Isaac G. Perry in the castellated Late Victorian style as a National Guard Armory for the 46th Separate Company of the New York Army National Guard.”

April 2001Heavy RainAmsterdam$1,000,000Excesssive rains and snowmelt led to massive erosion, resulting in a mudslide between Amsterdam and Rotterdam Junction in eastern Montgomery County. The mud slide took place, April 8, on an escarpment located on the north side of the Mohawk River. The mudslide encompassed a 35 to 40-yard stretch of Route 5, completely covering the westbound lane with mud, branches and large tree trunks. Traffic had to be re-routed for several days. A portion of Swart Hill Road was completely destroyed.

Several cars were damaged from this mudslide and Route 5 was closed for awhile. Additional minor accidents due to flooded roadways were noted in the nearby town of Florida.

September 2011Tornado (EF1)South Amsterdam-A tornado touched down in the Town of Florida in Montgomery County. It moved northeast to the western end of Glenville in Schenectady County. Damage was extensive along the entire path length, with the worst damage in the Town of Cranesville in Montgomery County. Damage included numerous trees snapped off and uprooted, broken windows to homes, shingles stripped off roof tops, and some houses which had parts of their roofs torn off. Numerous sheds and out buildings were destroyed. The tornado was caught on video from the Mohawk Travel Plaza rest area on the New York State Thruway.
