of America's 39 image records catalogued for this county. Every
one shown here carries a public-domain status or a licence that permits
reuse on a site that carries advertising; non-commercial, share-alike

county's towns (at most eight per town), so no single institution's
bulk upload crowds out the rest. Each opens the holding library's

The county from the air

Flown by the U.S. Geological Survey
between 1937 and 1989, the Aerial Photo Single Frames collection is
the definitive mid-century view of the land: fields, roads and rivers
as the camera saw them. The Survey holds 961 frames inside the
rectangle that bounds this county; the 39 frames below were taken over
the county itself, chosen across the decades of flights (at most four
a year from that rectangle), so one flight cannot crowd out the rest.

The most serious of them, by death, then
injury, then recorded damage. The accounts are quoted exactly as the
forecast office filed them.
Flash flooding occurred throughout Fort Plain due to heavy rainfall. Fifty to one hundred people were trapped in homes and water rescues needed to take place. Media reported up to two hundred homes were damaged or destroyed by flooding. Every road within the town was under water and some bridges were damaged or destroyed. One fatality occurred as flood waters swept a woman from a trailer away.
Record flooding occurred along the Schoharie Creek in Montgomery County. Several homes on Colyer Road in Burtonsville were destroyed. Excesssive rains and snowmelt led to massive erosion, resulting in a mudslide between Amsterdam and Rotterdam Junction in eastern Montgomery County. The mud slide took place, April 8, on an escarpment located on the north side of the Mohawk River. The mudslide encompassed a 35 to 40-yard stretch of Route 5, completely covering the westbound lane with mud, branches and large tree trunks. Traffic had to be re-routed for several days. A portion of Swart Hill Road was completely destroyed.
Flash flooding resulted in the closure of eastbound lanes of the New York State Thruway, Interstate 90, at mile marker 169, with at least 2 to 3 feet of water on the road. In addition, the westbound lanes were accumulating significant amounts of water as well.||Numerous roads were washed out across the county. On January 8 and 9, mild weather along with significant rain and snowmelt resulted in small stream flooding across Montgomery County. Severe flood damage was incurred especially due to the Chuctanunda and Cayadutta Creeks. At Amsterdam, the Chuctanunda Creek caused the bank to collapse at the Noteworthy Company which resulted in the evacuation of ninety people. After the bank collapsed the creek was pounding at the structure and this resulted in basement flooding and structural damage. There were many other road closures throughout the county due to ponding of water and small stream flooding including the creek at Rockton.

Road shoulders were washed out on Old Johnson Road. The Interstate 90 off-ramps were closed at Exit 28 in the village of Fultonville due to flooding.
