Economic Value
The Portsmouth shales form the basis of the extensive paving brick industry in the vicinity of Portsmouth and Sciotoville. The quantity of suitable material in these beds is practically unlimited, as the shales have been attacked only at a few places along the outcrop. At present the mining is confined to blasting the shales from the sides of the hills, or to working the beds by short entries.

32 since 2006The federal wildfire occurrence database lists 32 fires within 5 miles of Pine Grove between 2006 and 2020, burning about 227 acres in total. None started naturally. None was recorded as arson. Distance is straight-line from the map coordinates, so a fire counted here may appear on a neighbouring settlement's page as well.
