This documentation was undertaken in December, in accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement by the S. C. Department of Highways and Public Trans- portation as a means to mitigate the replacement of this metal truss bridge. Paul F. Embler Envir. Requirements Coordinator S. C. Department of Highways and Public Transportation Drawer 191 Columbia, SOUTH CAROLINA ROUTE 391 BRIDGE HAER No. (page 2) The Route 391 bridge over the Saluda River is a Warren through truss with polygonal upper cord and rigid joints. Length of the main span metal truss is 202 feet. Deck width, curb to curb, is feet. Total length of the bridge with concrete approach spans is 890 feet.

The bridge is believed to have been constructed in It is one of seven Warren through trusses of this design (polygonal cords and regid joints) and represents one of the less common designs found in the survey. The structure is one of 170 metal truss bridges originally identified in the S. C. Department of Highways and Public Transportation's Metal Truss Highway Bridge Inventory compiled by Clemson University in December, Approximately 148 of the structures are currently in use. The location of this bridge in relation to other metal truss bridges in the State can be seen on page 3. The bridge is identified as Saluda 3 in the bridge inventory and is one of four metal truss bridges originally found in Saluda County. All four bridge structures in the county have been scheduled for replacement.

A bar chart on page 4 refelcts the variety of metal truss bridge designs currently existing within the State. A listing of the various type of metal truss bridges can be found on pages 5 through 7 while bridge builders are listed on pages 8 through 10. Location of the bridge within Saluda County is shown on page 11. This through truss belongs to a family of similar bridges designed by the during the Files in the office of (Columbia) indicate that this bridge, like Saluda 2, replaced a previous bridge on the site which washed away in the floods of Like Saluda 2, this bridge crosses over a portion of the Saluda River which has become Lake Murray. The setting for the two bridges is therefore quite similar. The bridge appears to have been well maintained, and has a fresh coat of silver paint.

Some structural members appear to have been damaged from blows by logging trucks. The Mills map of SC reveals that a ferry, known as Bates Ferry, existed at this site in the early 3 ~- -( .-, I I 'I. , ~ \ &lfl!Al:>l<al .!, !ill! ~ \ ~ -- \o\ .
