Storms near this place
11 since 1996Regional context, not property-specific evidence. The National Weather Service names Osceola in 11 storm reports between 1996 and 2022: 5 hail, 2 thunderstorm wind, 2 flood, 2 tornado. No death or injury is recorded in these reports. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date opens the federal record of that event.
| When | Event | Place named | Harm | What the report says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| April 2011 | Flood | Osceola | $1,000,000 | Flooding of lakes and lowlands, including farmland, continued in the county through April. While flooding of small streams abated, lake flooding, particularly of Lakes Thompson and Henry, worsened. Numerous roads remained flooded and several were closed. Several homes were flooded, especially along Lake Thompson. High water and groundwater levels resulting from record precipitation in the previous year was the main reason that the flooding either grew worse or improved so slowly. |
| October 1996 | Thunderstorm Wind | Osceola | $10,000 | no account filed |
| June 2022 | Tornado (EF1) | Osceola | - | A tornado spun up in an open field one-quarter mile west of 418th Ave north of 204th Street in Beadle County. The tornado tracked east-northeast until reaching the county line. In Beadle County, the tornado caused no damage from which the NWS could assign an EF-scale rating. The tornado continued into Kingsbury County where it produced EF1 damage to power poles near the end of the track as it crossed 421st Avenue. The estimated maximum wind was 105 mph and the average path width in Kingsbury County was 40 yards. |
| June 2013 | Tornado (EF0) | Osceola | - | A brief tornado caused tree damage. |
| March 2011 | Flood | Osceola | - | Melting of a heavy winter snow cover caused flooding of lowlands, lakes, and small streams, including considerable flooding of farmland. Especially notable was the flooding of Lake Thompson. Numerous roads in the county were flooded. Some of the roads were closed, and some were washed out in spots. The flooding onset was rapid for a snow melt flood due to high water and groundwater levels from record precipitation in the year 2010. |
