17 Kelly Road Chicopee, Hampden County, Massachusetts HABS No. MA-1289-E USGS Springfield North Quadrangle Universal Transverse Mercator Coordinates: Sig:nificance: The house on the west side of Seawolf Avenue represents typical non- commissioned officer's housing during World War II. It comprises a portion of the original housing constructed on Westover Air Force Base during its period of initial development. Description: The small cape-style house is rectangular in plan and one-and-a-half stories in height. It is three bays wide and three bays deep. The wood-framed building is covered in asbestos siding. The gable roof is sheathed with asphalt shingles; the gable ends are oriented north-south.

The main, or east elevation, faces Seawolf Avenue and contains a central entryway, with a shed-roof portico covered in copper on paired wood posts. At each side of this door is a shuttered, six-over-six, wood-sash window. On the north and south elevations are three identical windows, one on the upper story and two on the first floor. The west, or rear elevation, is similar in appearance to the east elevation, with an entryway slightly south of center. Four windows are in this elevation, three six-over-six and one four-over-four abutting the doorway. There is a brick chimney, just west of the ridge line. In addition, a garage, with asbestos-shingle siding faces the interior courtyard. These also have asphalt-shingled, gable roofs.

Historv: Constructed in this house was planned as part of a group of twenty four. However, only six houses were constructed as Westover's role shifted to one of a training facility. When the installation was deactivated in the Air Force divested itself of much of the base housing. This structure was turned over to the Navy to house students enrolled in the nuclear training school in Windsor, Connecticut. The building was later turned back over to the Air Force. Since then many former family housing units have been converted into private condominiums. Although this building remains vacant, removal of this unit was required by the U.S. Congress to meet requirements for Westover's square footage allowance. Demolition was completed by Air Force Reserve.
