There were other Higgins famihes who settled near Mt, Carmel, 111., about the time that Josiah Higgins and his family came there. As far as known, they were not related to him. The U. S. Land Office records, the History of Wabash County, and the testimony of living persons show that these were: Ransom Higgins, who came from Knox Comity, Indiana, and settled in Wabash County in 1814-19; John Higgins who came from Allegany County, N. Y., filing his claim to land Jan. 15, 1817, and receiving a patent therefor on Jan. 23, 1818; and William Higgins, who filed a claim on Aug. 14, 1819, and received his patent April 4, 1825. The records of Edwards County, Illinois, from which Wabash County was taken, show that George W. Higgins, Ransom Higgins, and John Higgins resided near Lancaster in Sections 14 and 12, Township 1 North, Range 13 West, now in Wabash County. Israel Higgins, Barney Higgins, and William Higgins were located further west, being in Township 1 North, Range 14 West. Mr. Bryant Higgins of Olney, 111., son of Ransom Higgins, says: "My grandfather, whose name was George, was born in Connecticut in the City of Hartford, he being a tanner by trade. All his children were born at Hartford, Willis, William, Ransom, John, Anna, Lucy, Eunice, Nancy and Patty. Barney Higgins, of whom you speak, was my brother, - dead long ago." It is clear from the History of Wabash County (Philadelphia, 1882) that his family of Higginses came from Allegany County, N, Y., in 1816. Israel Higgins has not been located or accounted for. Mr. Bryant Higgins was probably mistaken about Hartford, Conn., as the home of his grandfather. It is more probable that George Higgins was from the family of Higginses who lived at Bedford, Westchester County, N. Y., Bryant Higgins having confused the name with that of Hartford, Conn., or unconsciously misplaced the locality in his memory, as he was an old man when he wrote the letter from which the statements are taken. He is also probably mistaken as to the parentage of William Higgins. William was still hving in Wabash County in 1850 and the U. S. census of that year gives his age as 65 and his birthplace as Massachusetts.

183. ELISHA6 HIGGINS {Elisha\ Elisha\ Elisha\ Jonathan"^, Richard}), born about 1767, probably at Williamstown, Mass.; died Aug. 30, 1818, probably at Willsborough, Essex County, N. Y.; married, but her name has not been found.

where he had a farm on Judd's grant, near Lake Champlain. Here he was a farmer until his death. A fragment of the title page of a New Testament has been preserved, whereon are written the date of his death and the names and births of his children. Mrs. Maxham says his first wife was a relative of Ethan Allen, and his second wife was Mary Farnham. The census of 1790 for New York shows that Elisha Higgins, Jr., of Willsborough had then a wife and one daughter.

had four daughters. One of them, Letitia, married Mr. Maxham, and is now living. She furnished the Bible record referred to. Her mother, Mrs. Jerusha Colvin, lived and died at Port Kent, Essex Co., N. Y.

Isaac Higgins removed from WilUamstown after 1790 to Willsborough, N. Y., now Essex, on Lake Champlain, and he received land there in 1799 from his father, EUsha Higgins, and in 1801 from his brother, Josiah Higgins. The town book of Essex, N. Y., covering years from 1806 to 1820 is extant and it mentions Isaac Higgins as a resident of District No. 16. Harrison Hagans is voucher for the tradition that his uncle Isaac Higgins was a very expert drummer, Harrison's father ha^dng told him this. IVIrs. Stickney says that Isaac adopted or brought up her mother, Hannah Eggleston, born Nov. 30, 1797, daughter of Richard and

Hannah (Higgins) Eggleston. The census of 1790 assigns to Isaac Higgins a family of one son under sixteen and three females, probably his daughters, besides himself and wife.

Henry Fisk Higgins resided at Hardwick, Mass., but afterw^ard in Ware, Mass. He was deacon in the church and an able and successful carpenter and builder.

Sylvanus Higgins resided at Orleans, Mass., and at Hingham Center, where he died. He was a master mariner. Five eldest children born at Orleans, Mass.

G. Tower as his second wife, viii. Emily, b. Oct. 23, 1821; d. Oct. 4, 1846; married Feb. 2, 1842, Joshua Jacobs. Her son Joshua lived at Egremont and married Mary Marsh.

Sparrow, and of Obadiah Higgins. She married as her fourth husband, Oct. 9, 1800, Thomas Rogers, son of Solomon and Tabitha (Twining) Rogers of Eastham.

195. CORNELIUS*^ HIGGINS {Cornelius\ Ebenezer\ Ichabod^, Benjamin'^, Richard^), born July 22, 1744, probably at Haddam, Conn.; died there in 1834, aged 90; married (1) Nov. 8,

Cornelius Higgins, Jr., resided at Haddam for most of his life and died there, his estate being settled (by will) in Connecticut in 1835. His services to his country in the Revolution (it is probable that all the following records refer to him, although possibly some of them may belong to Cornelius Higgins, Sr.) follow:

"Cornelius Higgins was a sergeant in Capt. Abraham Tyler's CO., Col. Jedidiah Huntington's (Eighth) regt., from July 1775 to Dec. 1775; regt, spent most of its time at Roxbury."

"Same regt. reorganized as Continental in 1776. Among the Ensigns was Cornelius Higgins, until the regt. was disbanded Dec. 31, 1776. Higgins was at the siege of Boston, and marched under Washington to New York; assisted in fortifying the City of New York; engaged in the battle of Long Island, Aug. 27, 1776; taken prisoner in this battle, and either escaped or was exchanged."

"Cornelius Higgins served in the Fifth regt., Connecticut Line, most of whose members enlisted for the war; commissioned Second Lieut. Jan. 1, 1777; promoted First Lieut. March 17, 1778; resigned Aug. 15, 1779."

"A provisional regiment was raised in 1781 to march on shortest notice in case Gen. Washington should call for them. Among its lieutenants was Cornelius Higgins, Junior, of Haddam." He received a pension under the Act of 1818, and again in 1832.

"In the early part of the spring and summer of 1794 there was a wonderful alarm and panic among the settlers of Onondaga Co., N. Y. Gov. Clinton in May appointed four of his highest military officers to call on Baron Steuben at his residence in Oneida County for advice. Twelve thousand pounds had been voted by the Legislature for defense. Military forces were assembled at Salt Point and reviewed by Baron Steuben, who advised the erection of a block house and proceeded to stake out the ground. Two Majors were commissioned to superintend the building of the block house, under the immediate inspection of Mr, Cornelius Higgins as master builder." - Clark's History of Onondaga, vol, ii, p. 153.

xi. Asa, b. Feb. 14, 1792; married Aug. 31, 1815, Mary Scovil, daughter of John and Mary (Smith) Scovil of Haddam, Conn. They were members of the Haddam Congregational Church in 1821 and took a letter of dismission to Covington, supposed to have been Covington, Wyoming Co., N. Y.

196. HAWES« HIGGINS {Cornelius^ Ehenezer\ Ichabod\ Benjamin^, Richard^), born April 10, 1752, at Haddam, Conn.; died there May 6, 1834; married there Sept. 16, 1773, Lucinda Bushnell, born May 16, 1754; died Nov. 26, 1834, at Haddam, Conn.; daughter of Gideon Bushnell of Saybrook, Conn.

Hawes Higgins resided at Haddam, Conn., all his life. He gave two years of active service in the Revolution and was at the battles of Stillwater and Saratoga. He received a pension as private and sergeant in the Connecticut Continental Line. He and his wife became members of the Haddam Congregational Church in October, 1774, but afterwards became Baptists.

Ebenezer Higgins was a man of great strength and full of fun. He was a Revolutionary soldier, like his father and all his brothers. He could place a heavy log-chain around himself and out jump any one in the town. He was a blacksmith by trade and his shop was near a bridge. On All Fool's Day (April first) he heated a horseshoe with long calks, drove the calks into the planking of the bridge and watched to see people undertake to pick the shoe up and get their fingers burnt. He removed from Haddam, Conn., to Westhampton, Mass., then to Auburn, N. Y., and finally to Perry, N. Y.

Second Church, New Haven, Conn., Eunice Gilbert, born May 12, 1762, at New Haven; died Oct. 2, 1843, at Norwalk, Ohio; a lineal descendant of Hon. Matthew Gilbert, an original settler of New Haven, Conn.

David Higgins was educated at Dartmouth and Yale, graduating from Yale in 1785. Served as a private in Revolutionary War. Pastor at North Lyme, now Hamburg, Conn. Missionary to new settlements in New Hampshire and Vermont in 1794, and to new settlements in New York State, going as far as the Genesee River in 1801. After the close of his mission, he preached for several months at Onondaga Hollow, near the present city of Syracuse, and at East Bloomfield and Aurelius, from each of which places he had a call, and finally settled at Aurelius (now Auburn), removing his family from Connecticut in July, 1802. In 1808, pastoral relations were dissolved, but he remained four years longer. In 1812, he received a call from the Presbyterian church at Bath, and in January following removed there with his family. He resided at Bath till 1835, when he removed to Norwalk, Ohio. When he died, he had no church in Ohio, but supplied pulpits at Norwalk, Milan, Huron, Brunson, Monroe ville, Peru and Paris, preaching only occasionally during the last two years. Onondaga County, of which Syracuse is the geographical center, as near as possible, and county seat, originally included five or six times as much territory as now, taking in the present county of Cayuga, in which the city of Auburn is situated. The settlement at Auburn in the town of Aurelius had no distinctive name. Missionaries were sent out to the settlements in New York State by the "Connecticut Association," among whom were Seth Williston and David Higgins.

The "First Presbyterian Society of Onondaga" was formed on the Hill (Onondaga Hill, four miles from center of present city of Syracuse, which was not settled until about 1815, and received its name Syracuse about 1824) at the log tavern, kept by Daniel Earll. Rev. David Higgins preached for a time, followed by a Mr. Haly, the only ministers before 1806. Rev. Dirk C. Lansing was ordained and settled in 1807. Their church edifice was erected in 1819. Rev. Seth Williston, in a letter giving an account of revivals occurring in this field under date of April 29, 1799, writes: "I have lately heard from Aurelius in Onondaga county, that the spirit of God is poured out upon one part of the town."

We have now come to the date of the formation of the first church within the present Hmits of Auburn and AureHus. It was one of the lights kindled in the great revival of 1799. For some two or three years the church was dependent upon the casual labor of the passing missionary, until 1801, when Rev. David Higgins from North Lyme, Conn., visited it in his brief service of the Connecticut Association, and accepted a call as its pastor, with the understanding that he would return the following year for permanent settlement. It took corporate form and title as the First Congregational Society of Aurelius, May 21, 1802, at a meeting held at the public house of Henry Moore, situated about a mile from the Half Acre, on the road to Union Springs. Mr. Higgins returned, according to the arrangement, and was installed Oct. 9, 1802. He remained with the congregation here until February, 1813, when he was released from his pastoral relations with the church of Aurelius, to take charge of the church at Bath, Steuben Co. June 7, 1783, Lydia Cahoon (marriage recorded at Wellfleet, Richard Higgins being of Eastham), born at Wellfleet; died 1843 at Stark, Maine.

It is a tradition that he served in the Revolution with his father, and the records appear to confirm it, although Richard was, but little more than fourteen years old when he enlisted.

Richard Higgins remained in Eastham until after 1790, for he is included in the census of that year at Eastham. He afterwards removed to Stark, Maine, and later still, probably in old age, to Leeds and Farmington, Maine.

Descriptive list of men raised to reinforce the Continental Army for the term of 6 mos., agreeable to resolve of June 5, 1780, returned as received of Justin Ely, Commissioner, by Brig. Gen. John Glover, at Springfield, July 18, 1780; aged 23 years; stature 5 ft. 7 in.; complexion light; engaged for town of Eastham; marched to camp July 18, 1780, under command of Joseph Brown, Esq.; also pay roll for 6 mos. men raised for the town of Eastham for service in the Continental Army during 1780, service 5 mos. 24 days."

David Higgins moved with his father from Eastham to Jamaica, Vt., then to Ohio and finally to Indiana. He is said to have had a large family, but only one has been discovered.

vii. George Zoheth, b. Dec. 29, 1832; married July 4, 1858, Kate Ford Lamson, daughter of John Lamson of Lubec, Maine. He was a physician. He had a daughter, Lelia Higgins, who was also a physician.

212. ZACCHEUS^ HIGGINS {Zaccheus^ Joshua\ Richard?, Benjamin^, Richard^), born April 1, 1761, at Eastham; died Jan. 15, 1816, age 56; married March 9, 1786, Hannah Twining, born Dec. 7, 1766; died April 22 or 24, 1845, aged 79; daughter of Barnabas and Abigail (Nickerson) Twining of Eastham.

Zaccheus Higgins lived at Eastham-Orleans. Hannah, wife of Zaccheus Higgins, was admitted to membership in the First Church, Eastham-Orleans, Nov. 30, 1800. Gravestones at Orleans. He held town offices in 1793, 1798, and 1813.

213. KNOWLES^ HIGGINS {Zaccheus\ Joshua\ Richard\ Benjamin^, Richard^), born Sept. 25, 1773, at Eastham; died , married March 26, 1795, at Standish, Me., Mary Rand.

Knowles Higgins probably removed to Standish, Maine, for the records of that town show the marriage intention of Knowles Higgins of Standish and Mary Rand, filed Dec. 20, 1794. Nothing fm-ther is known concerning them.

Hatsald or "Hatsel" Higgins lived at Eastham-Orleans. Mrs. Mercy Higgins was a member of the First Church of Eastham- Orleans in 1794. She survived her husband. Administration on his estate was granted Nov. 3, 1831, to Leonard Higgins.

Joshua Higgins lived at Eastham until after the death of his first wife and his remarriage. About 1805, he removed to Hampden, Maine. Mrs. Thankful Higgins married (2) Joseph Snow of Hampden.

219. ELEAZER6 HIGGINS {Enoch\ Eleazer\ Richard\ Benjamin^, Richard^), born Aug. 28, 1759; died at Wellfleet Nov. 17, 1831; married Nov. 1, 1784, Lurania Gross, born in 1766; died July 17, 1856; daughter of Deacon Thomas Gross.

Eleazer Higgins was at the seige of Boston when but seventeen years old. Subsequently he enlisted as a privateer, was taken prisoner in 1780 and confined in the Old Mill at Dartmoor, in England. He was in Capt. Isaiah Higgins's co.. Col. Thomas Marshall's regt. Later he appears to have been a mariner, for he is called Capt. Eleazer Higgins in the records.

He bought estates in Charlestown, Mass., in 1803 and 1805, and died there March 2, 1813, aged 48, according to gravestone. No children mentioned.

He was a shoemaker at Leland's Cove, Eden, Maine; was the first signer to the articles of the Eden Baptist Church and was deacon of this church at one time.

He was a man who had inherited all the sturdy qualities of his ancestors, and was of great influence in every community in which he lived. He was one of the successful shipbuilders of Portland and followed this work later on at Yarmouth. He purchased a farm in Gray, which his son managed, and Eleazer continued in active business and was superintending the building of a ship when his last sickness overcame him.

He settled at Indian Point, Mount Desert, Maine. He lost his home by mortgaging it as security for payment on a vessel which he bought and which proved to be a losing property. Then he went to North Ellsworth, and Uved with his son Ephraim until the latter's death, when he retired to the home of his daughter Roxana Osgood, at Bluehill, where he died aged over eighty years.

He resided at Spruce Point, Mount Desert, Maine, and then crossed the cove to Indian Point, the first Higgins to settle there. Here he conducted a farm for years.

Ezekiel H. Higgins was for some years a member of the firm of Higgins & Bradley, who for sixty years conducted a large bookbindery in Boston.

Samuel Higgins resided at Chatham and Brewster, Mass., and at Syracuse, N. Y. He followed the sea for forty years, commencing at nine years of age as cabin boy, and held every position on a sailing vessel to master mariner. About 1813, while on a foreign voyage, his vessel was taken by pirates and he was held a prisoner for five years, during which time no tidings whatever came from him or of him. Mrs. Higgins had lost four brothers at sea, so when her own boys grew up, she was determined that none of them should go to sea, and it was through her efforts that the family removed to Syracuse where the boys could find other employment. She died of heart disease while attending communion service in Park Presbyterian Church, Syracuse. Her daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter, four generations, were present, besides other members of the family, occupying different pews. Samuel Higgins died about the same hour ten weeks later. Both were buried in the family plot in Oakwood Cemetery at Syracuse.

Clark, vii. George Edwin, b. Sept. 15, 1828, at Brewster; d. April 21, 1862, in San Francisco, Cal., and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, N. Y.; unmarried; was a jeweler in Syracuse, N. Y. viii. Alfred, b. March 31, 1830; d. June 2, 1915; unmarried; lived 78 years in Syracuse, N. Y.; general agent for American Express Co. Entered the employ of the company 1857, and continued in its service until Jan. 7, 1915. He served as alderman 1864-66, and 1875-79; and member of the Board of Excise.

V. Willard Sears, b. Dec. 12, 1826; d. Jan. 9, 1866, at Queenstown, Ireland; married April 21, 1854, Olive Clark Freeman; no children. His wife married (2) Dec. 2, 1869, Elisha D. Winslow. Captain Higgins was master of a ship and was caring for it in Queenstown Harbor, Ireland, when he was killed.

Standing on one of the highest hills of Thorndike, Maine, commanding an extensive view of the surrounding country is the old Center Free Will Baptist Church, erected in 1832. The Society was organized in 1803 with Joseph Higgins as pastor, who for fifty years labored six days every week on his farm and preached two sermons every Sunday during that time, reluctantly surrendering the active pastorate at the age of 77 years. For a long term of years the old church was the "Mecca" of the Free Will Baptists in Waldo and Southern Penobscot counties. The country for miles around sent large delegations to its Sunday meetings and quarterly conventions. The religious enthusiasm of the majority of the people was intense and the eloquence and zeal equally so, and the result of the combination was many revivals and large additions to the church membership. For over sixty years the interior of the church was unpainted, but in 1892 the building was generally repaired and improved and somewhat modernized.

Here was sown some of the seed that bore fruit in the temperance agitation and here intensely earnest and eloquent speakers thundered against the trafl&c in rum. Here rallied the pioneers for human freedom and emancipation of the slaves before the Civil War. On the occasion when John P. Hale and Joshua R. Giddings came to address a great mass meeting of Free Soilers, Elder Joseph Higgins opened the meeting with an appeal never forgotten by one, at least, of his hearers. It was a combination of stump speech and prayer, for when introduced by the chairman to invoke divine guidance, his first sentence was : "Thank God for John P. Hale; thank God for Joshua R. Giddings; thank God for the men of brain, of conscience and courage who have been raised up by the Almighty - gladiators in the battle for freedom against the wicked monster. Slavery." It continued red hot to the end, and was punctuated all through its delivery with a tempest of "amens." Among the original and later members of the old church were Elder Joseph Higgins, Isaac Higgins, Deacon Joseph Higgins, Gen. W. F. Higgins, Simeon C. Higgins, Reuben Higgins, Marshall T. Higgins, Betsey Files Higgins, wife of Elder Joseph Higgins, Phoebe Coffin Higgins, Susan Higgins, Louise W. Higgins, Temperance Higgins, Martha, Eunice and Ruth Higgins, Alvina Higgins.

Elder Higgins was born in Eastham in 1776, but removed to Gorham, Maine, in childhood and there married Betsey Files. At the beginning of their married life they migrated to Thorndike. This town, then known as Lincoln plantation, was then receiving its first settlers. Elder Higgins was a strong man physically and intellectually, commanded great respect from his fellow townsmen, and stood high in the councils of his church. He declined to take part in public affairs, devoting himself to religious work and the upbuilding of his church. He was the first clerk of the township and taught the second school in the town and remained active pastor of the church for fifty years, giving way to a younger man when the society was still at the height of its strength and prosperity.

His wife. Aunt Betsey, as she was known to all, was a worthy helper and greatly beloved in the community and their lives fittingly closed together on the same day, within a few hours, he at the age of 91, she at 89 years.

iv. Joanna, b. Jan. 21, 1811; married (1) Capt. George Dyer of Thorndike who was lost at sea; (2) Benjamin York of Jackson, Maine. Mr. York was a member of the Legislature in 1858. 264. ENOCH FREEMAN^ HIGGINS {Joseph\ Isaac\ Isaac\ Benjamin'^, Richard^), born July 25, 1789; died Jan. 25, 1834; married Nov. 3, 1810 (another record says Nov. 6, 1813), Miriam Deane, born Jan. 6, 1787; "died about 1885, aged ninety-six," daughter of John Deane, Esq., formerly of Dedham, Mass.

Enoch F. Higgins resided at Gorham and at Standish, Maine, on a farm on the Portland road, which in 1894 was owned by his grandson, John Deane Higgins.

He lived and died on the old homestead which was cleared by his father in 1794. He lived to be nearly 101 years of age. He had his faculties to the end.

He had no children, but adopted John Lowell, grandson of his sister, Mercy Higgins, an orphan of six months, who became known as John Lowell Higgins.

William Bradford of Plymouth, Mass.

He lived in Chatham but removed to Haddam, Conn., where he joined the First Church, Nov. 19, 1809. His wife brought letter from Easthampton (town of Chatham), Conn., June, 1812.

He resided at East or Middle Haddam, Conn., and removed to Hamilton, N. Y., in 1810. Mrs. Elizabeth Higgins was dismissed to the church at Hamilton, N. Y.

James Higgins built a brick house in Madison Street, Hamilton, Madison County, N. Y. He was one of the first settlers, a cabinetmaker, later kept a hotel at East Hamilton, and finally had a tannery at Earlville. The oldest house in the cabinetware trade is that now (1872) belonging to Hall & Leach on Lebanon Street. The original proprietor was James Higgins who opened the first cabinet shop in the village on Madison Street.

Sylvester Higgins removed from Haddam Neck or East Haddam, Conn., to South Hadley, Mass., where he owned a farm which is now a part of the campus of Mount Holyoke College,

Darius Higgins probably removed to New Haven with his parents before 1790, but he may have spent some time in Killingworth as he married a wife of that town, although their marriage is recorded at New Haven. Darius Higgins probably became an Episcopalian, for his gravestone is found in the Episcopal Cemetery at New Haven. His occupation has not been discovered. He may have had other children than those here named.

Bela Higgins seems to have come to New Haven with his parents in boyhood, before 1790, and to have Uved there all his life. His occupation has not been discovered.

Asa Higgins was a resident of Eastham-Orleans. Mrs. Higgins was admitted a member of the First Church, Eastham-Orleans, Feb. 23, 1794. He was assessor in 1813. His will, dated March 19, 1827, was finally proved March 11, 1828, the original will having been destroyed in the fire when the Barnstable County Court House was burned in 1827, and a copy offered for probate.

James Higgins lived at Eastham-Orleans and is called James Higgins, Jr. He was a sea captain. His will, dated Nov, 19, 1829, was proved March 31, 1830. His children were then all living.

He was living at Bath, Maine, in 1790, and then had ten children, five sons and five daughters, according to the census of 1790. At time of his marriage he is called of Georgetown.

Reuben Higgins probably went from Eastham to Georgetown, Maine, with his father, settling in that part of the town from which Bath was later set off. Here he grew up and married and spent his entire life. He was a farmer and deacon in the church.

Simeon Hopkins, father of Mrs. Higgins, was born Feb. 7, 1731, at Truro, Mass., and died at Harpswell, Maine, in March, 1815. He married Aug. 28, 1755, Betty Cobb, born 1732. He was fifth in descent from Stephen Hopkins, the Mayflower passenger of 1620.

Simeon Higgins went with his father when very young to Georgetown, Maine. Later a part of Georgetown was organized as Bath, and the census of 1790 shows Simeon Higgins living at Bath and having four or five children. It is believed that some, at least, of the Higginses of Harpswell and Brunswick, Maine, were his descendants, but they have not been fully traced. The following are found in the records of Brunswick:

Abram Higgins, born in Harpswell, Maine, Hved in Brunswick; married Hattie D. Elwell of Brunswick, born in Poland, Maine. Their second child was Clara M. Higgins.

Henry Higgins resided at Wellfleet. The will of Henry Higgins of Wellfleet, dated Oct. 19, 1848, proved Nov. 1, 1849, mentions wife Hannah, daughter Hannah M. and other children.

294. JUDAH^ HIGGINS {Samuel\ Paul\ Benjamin^, Benjamin^, Richard}), born Oct. 12, 1784, at South Orleans, Mass.; died there Nov. 4, 1854; married Feb. 12, 1806, EHzabeth Small of Harwich, Mass., born Nov. 3, 1786; died June 5, 1842, at South Orleans; daughter of Eli and (Rogers) Small.

Judah Higgins was a mariner and when ashore and after he retired from the sea Uved at South Orleans. He held a town office in Orleans in 1814.

The wife of Eli Small was a daughter of Enos Rogers and granddaughter of Judah Rogers, for many years deacon of the First Church of Christ at Orleans and selectman of the town of Eastham. Both Judah Higgins and his wife were direct and lineal descendants of Thomas and Joseph Rogers, the Mayflower passengers of 1620.

Israel Higgins settled at Bar Harbor. He was a sea captain or "master mariner." He took command of the schooner Hazard of Eden on May 12, 1809, Samuel Hadlock of Mt. Desert owner, built in 1809, the first vessel built in the town of Eden. He was one of the selectmen of Eden m 1802, 1803 and 1809. He and his son Seth were lost from on board the schooner Jidia Ann, twentyfive miles south from Sandy Hook, March 29, 1823.

Samuel Hull, father of Israel Higgins' wife, was a sea captain. Before 1789 he settled on the south side of Hull's Cove (named for him), where he kept a store and built a number of vessels. He was the chief citizen of the Httle village and took an active part in the business of the towns of Mt. Desert and Eden. The first town meeting was held at his house and he was chosen first selectman. The famous Commodore Isaac Hull, commander of the frigate Constitution, was his brother.

Solomon Higgins was a master of a vessel and was lost at sea, perhaps in 1820. Mrs. Hannah Higgins did not marry again, but went out nursing to support her children. She engaged in this until the time of her death.

Josiah S. Higgins was probably a rigger erf vessels at New York. He died of pneumonia, and his widow died in consequence of a fall downstairs.

Prince Higgins was probably fourteen or fifteen years old when his father removed from Eastham to Standish. He grew to manhood amidst the hardships of pioneer life in a settlement in the Maine woods. He inherited a sturdy and robust body and an active mind. No doubt the life in the pioneer settlement developed these endowments. He became noted for his selfreliance, strength and courage. He was also an excellent mechanic, operating mills and a cooper shop.

It is said that he went back to Eastham, Cape Cod, for his wife, who was Selina Higgins, daughter of Seth and Martha (Linnell) Higgins. This may possibly be true, but since Seth and Martha Higgins emigrated from Eastham to Standish at some time after 1790, bringing their family with them, it is more probable that the acquaintance of Prince and Selina ripened into love and marriage in their homes at Standish. It is of course certain that they must have been well acquainted with each other as children in the old homes at Eastham. Selina was also noted for her great strength, and the old residents tell of the ease with which she could carry heavy pails of milk and feed for the animals. Both Prince and Selina lie buried in the cemetery at Standish, and on the stone which marks the grave of Selina is the following epitaph :

Joseph T. Higgins resided at Rahway, N. J., where he owned a house and lot. His will, dated Aug. 9, 1856, shows that he was then ill and he left all to his wife, Susan C. Higgins. No children

James D. Higgins lived at Newark, N. J. He appears from the inventory of his estate to have been a coach or wagon maker. His will, dated Jan. 20, proved Jan. 30, 1844 (Trenton, N. J., File No. 13359 G), gives his residence as the City of Newark and leaves all his estate to his wife for support of herseK and infant child. In case of the death of both the real estate to be divided among his brothers and sisters then living.

Jonathan J. Higgins and wife were buried at Flemington, but his will, dated Feb. 25, 1840, and mentioning wife Eleanor and four children, was probated at Somerville, Somerset County, N. J. He resided at Hillsborough, Somerset County, N. J.

J., who has rendered great assistance to this work in tracing the descendants of Richard Higgins in New Jersey.

J., until health failed. He was born Oct. 13, 1817, and d. May, 1887, at Newark, N. J. Children: John Higgins Schrope, b. Sept. 16, 1840; George Baldwin Schrope, b. Dec. 14, 1842, d. July 18, 1900, married Amy Elizabeth Robbins; Rebecca Higgins Schrope, b. Jan. 25, 1845, married Thomas Schrope, b. March 12, 1847; Eugene Kincaid Schrope, b. It is stated that Jesse Higgins and family lived at New Brunswick, N. J., but the family monument is in the Baptist Cemetery at Flemington, N. J., and it is certain that some of the family lived there. Family tradition states that Henry Clark, father of Mrs. Higgins, served in the Revolutionary War.

Charles C. Higgins lived at Howell, N. J., where he had a farm or plantation. At the time of his death he was residing at Raritan township, Hunterdon (.?) County, N. J. He also owned land at Freehold, N. J. His will, dated July 27, 1857, proved Sept. 24, 1857, mentions wife Ellen, two sons and five daughters.

V. Mary Louisa, b. May 9, 1831; married John Patterson and lived at Key port, N. J. Children: Charles Patterson (lives at Brooklyn, N. Y.); Evelyn Patterson (deceased); Catherine Patterson (deceased).

Lieut. Col. John Downie came from Scotland with Dr. John Witherspoon in 1768 in the same ship, the latter having been elected to the presidency of Princeton College, and coming over that year to take the office. Family tradition says that Colonel Downie's eldest son William was a babe in the arms of his mother at the time of the battle of Princeton. She, in an effort to cross the street, encountered the retreating Hessians, who stopped her, took the silver shoe buckles from her shoes, and asked where the father of the child was. She replied "At Ticonderoga." They retorted, "Burgoyne has got him before this."

. i. Henrietta Maria, b. May 15, 1817; d. May 20, 1876; married 1840, Rev. Peter Dougherty. She had eight daughters and one son. Two, Cornelia Shiel and Susan Augusta Dougherty, were for a long time missionary workers among the Indians in northern Minnesota. Her son, Henry Dougherty, resides at Warsaw, Ind.

ii. Susan, b. May 3, 1820; d. April, 1899; married, 1854, William Rowland and went with him to Virginia; had two children who d. in infancy and one son, William H. Rowland, who in 1909 was living at Chester, near Richmond, Va., was married and had six children, iii. Cornelia, b. Aug. 3, 1825; d. Sept. 22, 1908.

Isaac Higgins removed from Somerset County, N. J., and settled in Chester, Pa. In 1900 there were some of his descendants living in Chester, Pa., or in Wilmington, Del.

John Higgins lived at Newells, near Flemington, Hunterdon County, N. J. He was generally known as John W. Higgins, the middle initial being added to distinguish him.

i. Alice Ann, b. Jan. 7, 1830; married Wilson Abbott; had one daughter, Ella, who married Stilford Closson. ii. Mary Ellen, b. Dec. 28, 1832; married Enoch L. Abbott; had six children.

Lewis Higgins resided at Stanton and at Clinton, N. J. Lewis Higgins enlisted in the Fifteenth New Jersey regt. in 1862. He was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness, May 5-7, 1864. Mr. William Dungan of Ringoes, N. J., has the original muster roll and discharge book, showing non-return of Lewis Higgins. Clinton B. Higgins, grandson of Lewis Higgins, says that his grandfather was killed at the Battle of Cold Harbor, June 1-4, 1864.

Mahlon Higgins lived on and owned a farm in Raritan township, Hunterdon County, N. J., now occupied by his son Vandervier Higgins, near Flemington. Family buried at Flemington Baptist Cemetery.

347. DANIEL^ HIGGINS (Samuel^ Jonathan^ Richard^ Zerah^, Richard^), born about 1760; died Oct. 13, 1823; married Sarah Pound, born about 1758; died Aug. 28, 1810. She was from Scotch Plain or Plainfield, N. J.

Daniel Higgins was a farmer and served in the Revolutionary War. He lived at a place called Connecticut Farms, in Elizabethtown, now called Union. He and some of his family are interred in the Presbyterian Churchyard, Union, N. J.

James Higgins was a native of Union township, N. J., and hved there all his life. He was a farmer by occupation. James Higgins served in First Regiment, Essex Co. Militia during the Revolutionary War. He had an eventful life, but what the "events" were, we are not informed. Mr. James Wallace Higgins, his lineal descendant, says that James Higgins's farm was between Connecticut Farms and Cranford, N. J,

Feb. 27, 1808, proved March 11, 1808, mentions wife Hannah and the four children given below, who were not then deceased. The will of Hannah Higgins of Elizabeth, dated March 9, 1811, names son Elias Tooker Higgins and daughters Jane Davis and Elizabeth Cannaday Higgins. Dr. Isaac Morse of Elizabethtown to be executor and guardian of the two daughters.

David Higgins lived for some time in Gorham, Maine, on the Fort Hill road, just north of the old Col. Nathaniel Frost pface. He afterwards removed to Otisfield and Monson, Maine, but appears to have returned to Lewiston, Maine, where he died.

James Higgins resided at Orleans, Mass., and was a farmer. In January, 1832, James Higgins, Jr., was certified a member of the Methodist Society of Harwich and was then a resident of Orleans. His will was dated Jan. 1, 1844, the codicil was dated July 3, 1860, and both were approved by Barnstable Probate Court, May 16, 1871.

Joseph Hagans appears to have remained in New York or Vermont for several years after the departure of his father and younger brothers for the West. Whitman Fisk Higgins went from his native town of Hardwick in 1845 to Worcester, Mass., and 1901, was hving there. On his eightieth birthday he was still working for his employers, the Hamblin & Russell Manufacturing Company, as regularly as he did when a young man, being vigorous and strong. On that day a family reunion took place at his home, his sisters Mrs. O. M. Wood, Mrs. Cambridge Moulton, and Mrs. Franklin Barnes being present, as well as his brother Elon Galusha Higgins. The combined ages of the five were 374 years. Besides there were present twenty-two nieces and nephews, sixteen representatives of the third generation and two of the fourth. Mr. Higgins was twice married, but had no children.

Elon G. Higgins was educated in the district schools of Hardwick, Enfield and North Brookfield. His opportunities were limited, as he worked on a farm much of his time up to the age of seventeen. His father then gave him his time and he shifted for himself thereafter. After working for a time in shoe shops at North Brookfield and Worcester, in 1847 he learned the trade of paper hanger. He was skillful and thorough in his work and his business grew. He added a small stock of wall paper, which he kept at his house. From this small beginning grew a very large wholesale and retail business in wall paper. This business was incorporated in 1893 as the E. G. Higgins Company. By this time it had become one of the largest in New England. From 1869 to 1876 his brother, Francis Wayland Higgins, was associated with him in the business.

Mr. Higgins's character was clean and his piety intense. For nearly sixty years he was a member of the Second Advent Church at Worcester, in which he was a leader and generous supporter. He was personally acquainted with the leaders and preachers of that faith in the United States, and entertained many of them at his house. He took pride in the fact that he never saw a theatrical performance. He was a constant reader of the Bible and

Francis W. Higgins spent his boyhood in Hardwick, working on his father's farm and attending the district school. When he was nearly twenty years old he went to Worcester, where his brother had established a wall paper business. In 1867 the brothers formed a partnership which continued until 1873 and was very successful. Francis had the charge of the men employed in paper hanging and other decorative work and to his energy and efficiency much of the success of the firm was due. In 1873 he set up a business of his own and soon built up a profitable trade in wall papers. After a few years his health failed and he was obliged to retire.

Mr. Higgins was a quiet but a very worthy citizen, a man of great piety and thoroughly consistent in his daily life. He was a member of the Second Advent Church and commanded the respect of many who were not in sympathy with his religious convictions, because of his sincerity and sterling character.

Otis Higgins was the first physician at Perry, N. Y., and settled there about 1820. He was one of the original members of the Presbyterian Church at Perry, organized in 1834.

He removed from Aurelius, Cayuga Co., N. Y., to Perry, about 1830 or 1831. Lived on a farm a Uttle east of Perry village, where the seven sons of the second wife were born.

David Higgins studied law and became a lawyer. He was Circuit Judge of Northern Ohio for many years. In 1846, after Polk's inauguration, he secured a clerkship in Washington, which he retained until his death.

William Higgins was a millwright. He resided in New York City, in La Porte, Ind., and in Iowa. His cousin, W^illiam Edward Higgins, son of James Gilbert Higgins, says that William Higgins laid out and built the village of Higginsville, Bl.

Josiah Higgins lived at Eastham, probably in the northern part of the present town of Eastham, as his father had done. The will of Isaac Snow mentions the children of his daughter Hannah Higgins, Wilhs, Joseph, Mary J., Russell S., Elbridge and Amos.

Ebenezer L. Higgins resided at Eden, Mount Desert, Maine. He was a master mariner, and also a large property owner. It is said that at one time he was the heaviest taxpayer on the island of Mount Desert. He was a member of the legislature of Maine in 1839 and held many other ojffices. It is said that he was the bearer of the last communication that passed between the governments of the United States and Mexico, previous to the outbreak of the Mexican War.

Samuel D. Higgins was a physician. Mrs. Higgins's parents moved to Deposit, N. Y., when she was only one year old and at her death she was the oldest resident there. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, an earnest Christian woman, kind-hearted, and possessing a remarkably acute business sense and a clear and active mind. Mr. Higgins practiced medicine at Deposit for forty years, until his death.

Amos Higgins was a very faithful student in the common schools, and early in life saw that there were fine openings in the new towns of his native state. Impelled by the same pioneer spirit which had caused many of his family name to make grand success in life by removals into new conditions, he went to Garland, Maine, 1822, bought wild land, built a log cabin, 1822, and began the work to which was devoted his entire life, farming. In 1840 he changed this farm for one in Charleston (since known as the "Old Pearl Place"), abandoned as a farm in 1900, and the buildings were removed by Henry A. Higgins and added to his at Charleston Village, and there he lived the remainder of his days. He was a man of sterling qualities, strictest integrity, industrious and veryrigid in the discipline of his large family. In politics he was a Republican, and ever took a deep interest in all national affairs. He was a very faithful member of the Free Will Baptist Church, and was never absent from church services unless detained by

Aug. 11, 1864, in California. He was a blacksmith at Atkinson, Maine. In 1852, he left his family, and went to California to seek gold. He returned to his family after a number of years. May 6, 1892, at Atkinson, Maine; married Sept. 28, 1842, Edward B. Page of Charleston and Atkinson, Maine, where he d. June 14, 1872. He was a successful farmer, highly esteemed for his strict integrity and exemplary character. Mrs. Page was loved and honored, genuinely charitable, and a staunch supporter of the Free Baptist Church of which she was a member. Children : Mehssa Page, b. Yi. Charlotte Ellen, b. April 23, 1839, in Garland, Maine; d. April 29, 1911, at Charleston, Maine; well educated, a teacher for several years, of remarkable business ability; married (1) in 1866, Dr. E. D. Sargent of Washington, Vt.; secured a divorce and married (2) in 1878, Rev. H. R. Howes of China, Maine. In 1885, she returned to Charleston, Maine, and lived there the remainder of her life. Children: Mabel E. Sargent, b. May 24, 1867; d. June 11, 1882; Estella A. Howes, b. July 8, 1879, at East Burke, Vt., a teacher and librarian; J. Herbert Howes, b. South Woodbury, Vt., Dec. 5, 1880, a farmer at Charleston, Maine; married May 11, 1907, Edith M. Hatte of East Machias, Maine. No children.

471. ARTHURS HIGGINS {Eleazer\ Reuben\ Reuben\ Richard^, Benjamin^, Richard^), born Feb. 8, 1808, at Gray, Maine; died there Feb. 6, 1888; married May 16, 1833, Susan Perley of Gray, Maine, daughter of Isaac Perley.

Arthur Higgins lived all his life at Gray, Maine, and lived on the home farm. He was highly respected as a man of strictest integrity and exemplary character. For over forty years he was a trustee of the Baptist Church. In politics he was a Republican.

iii. Susan Dyer, b. Nov. 9, 1839; d. Aug. 5, 1895; married Dec. 4, 1862, Cyrus Jordan Perley, a farmer of Gray, Maine. He served two years in the Civil War, was wounded and a cripple, using a crutch, for the remainder of his life. No children.

George Higgins was a carpenter and builder of marked ability, being considered one of the very best of his time. He built the old Rutgers College on Fifth Avenue at Forty-second Street and many noted buildings in prominent sections of the city. He was a natural genius, of great integrity, and commanding appearance. He was a prominent member of the Baptist Church and a Republican in politics.

i. Mary Ellen, b. Aug. 15, 1843; d. in New York City, Oct. 22, 1871; married Nov. 1, 1866, Dr. S. D. Wadsworth, b. March 16, 1834, in Michigan; d. Jan. 19, 1875. Dr. Wadsworth was a practicing physician in New York City, highly esteemed in the profession and by a very large circle of friends. No children.

iii. Lucie Anna, b. Sept. 2, 1849; married Oct. 3, 1876, in New York City, Frank Littlefield, b. July 22, 1850, at Portland, Maine; d. April 28, 1905, at New York. Mrs. Littlefield is living in Harlem, N. Y. She was educated in New York and graduated from Rutgers College; a lady of refined and religious character. Mr. Littlefield was for many years a salesman in the employ of the Higgins Carpet Company in their wholesale department in White Street, New York. In 1890 he engaged in the retail carpet business for himself. This venture not being successful, he^ discontinued it after three years and was not in business at the time of his decease.
