JOSHUA DICKERSON, b. 1740; d. in Fayette county, Penn., Oct. 10, 1827; came from New Jersey; settled on what is now called Dickerson's Run, in Dunbar township, near East Liberty, Fayette county, Penn., about 1770; here, in 1780, he built a grist-mill on the site of the mill now owned by the Oglevee brothers; from this settlement and its vicinity emigrated to Harrison county the families of Dunlap, Oglevee, Barricklow, Rankin, and others; Joshua Dickerson had six sons, Thomas, William, John, Joshua, Levi, and Eli, all of whom removed to Ohio near the beginning of the present century. JOHN GASTON, b. about 1600, in Scotland (or France), of Huguenot descent; m. in Scotland, and had, among others, three sons: John, William, and Alexander, who emigrated to county Antrim, Ireland, about 1660-1668; of these, probably John (whose name appears on hearth-money rate list for Ireland in 1669, is of Magheragall, county Antrim) had issue, among others, several sons, some of whom remained in Ireland, and some emigrated to America, as did also the sons of other brothers; of the emigrants of that generation the names of eight are known (and the children of William, son of John last named), viz., Hugh of New Jersey, Joseph of New Jersey, Joseph of Pennsylvania (probably a son of Hugh), William of Pennsylvania (probably a son of Hugh), John of New Jersey (probably a son of Hugh), James of New Jersey (probably a son of Hugh). John of Connecticut, Alexander of Massachusetts. Of these, the last two were brothers, and are said by Marshall Gaston's account to have first landed in New Jersey, with one or more other brothers, who remained there; it is probable that they may have been brothers of Hugh and

Joseph of New Jersey; they have also been identified in part as brothers of the William who remained at home, his residence being Caranleagh (Carnlough?), Cloughwater, county Antrim (near Ballymena), Ireland. In the account given below, these nine progenitors of the Gaston family in America will be designated as follows:

Another of the Gastons who remained in Ireland (living at Gastontown, Killycowan, county Antrim), had a daughter, who m. The name of John Gaston appears on the tax-list of Lurgan township. Cumberland (now Franklin) county, Penn,, in 1751, and the name of Robert Gaston on the tax-list of Sadsbury township, Lancaster county, 1754 to 1759. These may have been two of the brothers (sons of William of Antrim) recorded above.

James Gaston (1st), probably a brother to John Gaston of New Jersey (1st), his name appears as a subscriber to the fund for building Allentown Church parsonage, 1758, in connection with that of John Gaston of Upper Freehold (1st, above) ; possibly, he may have been the son of that John - whose oldest son, James, was baptized at Tennent Church, March 28, 1742. The name of James Gaston also appears as a member of the congregation of Lamington Church, in Bedminster township, Somerset county, N. J., during the pastorate of Rev. James McCrea, which terminated in 1766. A James Gaston also took up land in Mount Bethel township, Northampton county, Penn., in 1773 (probably son of William, 1st), and the name of James Gaston appears on tax-list of Cecil township, Washington county.
