Freeport Township (part 5 of 6)

James Johnson, father of Griffin Johnson, and grandfather of Mrs. Jemima Johnson Phillips and Mrs. Eleanor Johnson Phillips, was a resident of Ohio (now Brooke) county. West Vire-inia. where some time between 1776 and 1790, he was captured by the Indians while in camp on Mc- Intyre's Creek, in Jefferson county, in company with two neighbors, Mclntyre and Layport, who were killed. James Johnson was carried to Sandusky as a prisoner, but afterwards released and returned home. Later he settled in Warren township, Jefferson county, Ohio, where, in October, 1788, his two sons, John, aged thirteen, and Henry, aged eleven, while searching in the forest for their cows, Were captured by two Indians. When night came, the two boys arose, one of them secured possession of his captor's rifle, and the other, a tomahawk, with which they killed the two Indians while they slept. The two boys were afterwards donated a section of land by the Government for their bravery, it being located in Wells township, Jefferson county, the supposed scene of their adventure. The name, Simeral, is a corruption. It was originally Somerville, and was so written many times during the eighteenth century by the ancestors of families now bearing the name, Simeral. The Harrison county Simerals are probably descended from John Simeral, who removed from Adams county and settled in Hempfield (now South Huntingdon) township, Westmoreland county, Penn., before 1772, with his brother, Thomas Simeral (who died there in 1772) and sister. Marv Kincaid (wife of Robert Kincaid). John Simeral established a ferry acro'^s the Youshiosrheny River at the present town of West Newton (originally called Simera^'s Ferry, and Inter, Robbstown).
