King Of

nPHE Visitation of Kent contained in the following pages was commenced in 1663 and finished in 1668 by Sir Edward Bysshe, Knt., Clarenceux King of Arms.

The official copy in the Heralds' College is marked D. 18, and contains 353 Pedigrees, of which 322 are signed by the heads of the families.

Stowe MS. 621 in the British Museum, formerly the property of John Holland, is described in the catalogue : « Original Pedigrees of Kentish Families to 1663 (in which year Bysshe made a Visitation of the County), with the signatures of members of the several families, f. 2," and on the title page is written " A peice of the Visitation of Kent." This manuscript contains sixteen pedigrees in the same handwriting as the Heralds' College copy, and all signed by the heads of the families or their representatives, whereas the pedigrees of the same families lare not signed in the College copy, so it would seem that some of the original pages had been mislaid and a copy substituted for them in the official copy in the College. These pedigrees are marked (Stowe MS. 621) in the reference.

Several pedigrees from this Visitation have been printed from time to time in the " Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica," and these are also noted in the references.

The late Dr. Jackson Howard, P.S. A., and Mr. Eobert Hovenden, F.S A., printed a selection of twelve pedigrees from this Visitation in 1887, with very copious notes of wills, monumental inscriptions, charters, and registers. These are referred to as (Howard's Pedigrees, 1887).

There are also copies of forty-six pedigrees to be found in Add. MS. 5507 in the British Museum. These are in the handwriting of Mr. Edward Hasted, the Kent historian. They are referred to as (Add. MS. 5507).

The manuscript from which this book is printed is believed to be complete. It was purchased by the Society from a bookseller, who stated that it came from the library of the late Mr. Joseph Foster, who had previously purchased it by auction at the sale of the late Dr. J. J. Howard's

MSS. It is neatly written, and the arms tricked by the late Mr. J. J. Eedes. The arms are reproduced direct from the MS. by photographic process.

Sir Edward Bysshe, who received the Eoyal Commission to make this Visitation, was formerly Garter King of Arms, and was made so about 1643 by the Commonwealth Parliament, and in 1646 votes were passed in the House of Commons that he should likewise be Clarenceux King of Arms ; but after the Restoration he was by Act of Parliament obliged to quit the office of Garter in favour of Sir Edward Walker, but he obtained a patent, dated 10 March 1660-1, for the office of Clarenceux, which appointment was made in spite of the remonstrances of Sir Edward Walker and the College of Arms. He was knighted 20 April 1661.

There are several letters and documents relating to his differences with the College at this time in a volume of his letters, Add. MS. 22,883, and also in Lansdowne MS. 255. The latter is described in the catalogue as "Faults committed by him (Sir Edward Bysshe) in the Visitations of Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Surrey, Sussex, and Kent (fo. 50)." These complaints were delivered to Sir Edward Bysshe by his own request by Sir Edward Walker, Garter King of Arms.* He appaiently disregarded them, for at fo. 100 we find that an order was made by James, Earl of Suffolk, deputy to the Earl Marshal, prohibiting Sir Edward Bysshe to make airy new Visitations until he had rectified the errors and defects of the books of his Visitation of Kent (among others). There is in Add. MS. 22,883 a summary of the alleged errors in this Visitation, as follows : - have been done." It is curious to note that these complaints were mostly made between 1670 and 1674, whereas the Visitation is said to have been finished in 1668, but there is no further reference to them in the correspondence. Sir Edward Bysshe died in 1679.f

The Visitation does not appear to have been altered. It contains 353 pedigrees, of which 338 are signed, and 142 coats of arms, and a list of 51 Disclaimers. The list of Disclaimers is entered in the official Visitation, but the surnames only of the families are given. In Add. MS. 8931 is a copy of what is evidently the draft of the Proclamation which ought to have been published. It is as follows : -

Southward; not only to visitt all the Counties within his Province to peruse and take knowledge Survey and view of all manner of Amies Creasts, Cognizances and other like devices, with the notes of the descents Pedigrees and marriages of all the Nobility and Gentry therein throughout conteyned, But alsoe to reprove controle and make infamous by Proclamac'on all such as unlawfully and without just Authority vocac'on or due calling doe or have done or shall usurpe to take upon him or them any name or Title of Honour or Dignity as Esq. or Gentleman or other as by his Ma 1ies gracious Comission under the great Seale of England more plainely may appeare Know yee therefore that I the said Clarenceux King of Armes for the Accomplishmt of his Majesties desire & furtherance of his Majesties Service that way having made survey of the County of Kent have found these persons whose names are underwritten presumptuously and without any good ground or authority to have usurped the name and title of Gentleman contrary to all right, & to the Auntient Custome of this land, and the usage of the law of Armes, w ch name and Title they are from henceforth noe more to use or take upon them upon such further paine and peril as by the Lords Comissioners for the office of Earle Marshall of England shall bee inflicted and laid upon them/ whereof alsoe I have thought good heere to advertize all other his Ma ties good and loveing Subjects that they tender his Ma tles pleasure and desire in this behalfe, that they from henceforth shune & avoide the like, & forbeare to use in any writing or otherwise the addic'on of Esq. or Gent, unlesse they be able to stand to, & Justine the same by the law of Armes, and the lawe of the Eealme.

The Council have to report that at and since the Annual General Meeting, held on the 23rd day of February 1905, six new Subscribers have joined the Society, of whom four are Subscribers to the Eegister Section.

During the same period the Society has lost five Subscribers (of whom two belonged to the. Eegister Section) by death; six Subscribers (none of whom belonged to the Eegister Section) have resigned.
