Population over time
2 figuresOak Island grew from 363 to 371 between 2010 and 2020. These are the recorded population figures Wikidata holds for this place, reached through the Geographic Names Information System number this page is keyed on rather than by name, so they belong to this place and not to another of the same name. Most are census counts, but not all are: an early figure may be a founding or settlement estimate, and an estimate published within five years of a census is left out. The change column is computed, and is left blank where more than 20 years separate a figure from the one before it, because a gap that long is not a change between two counts.

6 since 1997Regional context, not property-specific evidence. The National Weather Service names Oak Island in 6 storm reports between 1997 and 2024: 2 hail, 2 tornado, 1 thunderstorm wind, 1 funnel cloud. The reports record 1 injury. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date opens the federal record of that event.
| When | Event | Place named | Harm | What the report says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December 2024 | Tornado (EF3) | Oak Island | 1 hurt | The local fire department initially reported that a car near Smith Point was thrown by a tornado.||The survey team found evidence of long track tornado from just east of Smith Point through the Chambers/Jefferson County border. Multiple spots of EF2 damage were found with snapped wooden power line poles and a tossed and destroyed mobile homes. EF3 damage was found along FM 1941 and TX-124 where two steel transmission lines were blown down. One injury was reported with this tornado, which had occurred along Smith Point Rd where a pickup truck was tossed, confirming the initial report by the fire department.||Based on radar data, it is likely this track is a direct continuation of the tornado on the west side of the Galveston Bay. However, there is no way to confirm this is the case as the tornado entering the bay was completely rain wrapped and there is no evidence confirming the tornado crossed Galveston Bay. |
