The people of Arizona are noted for their spirit of fairness. A square deal for everybody is the dominating idea in the mind of the average Arizonan. And a square deal to any governor who has given the sate one honest and economical administration means that he ought to be honored with a second term Governor Phillips has fulfilled his trust, He has shown his courage, righteousness and manner of clean living, Those are the character characteristics - istics characteristics tha«, appeal to the average Arizonan, He has shown hi 3 feel feeling - ing feeling of humbleness, He is not puff puffed - ed puffed up. He has not been inclined to pomp or bluster. He has endear endeared - ed endeared himself to all the people who believe i* good. He has not even used a State automobile to make his campaign tours, The average Arizonan is a thinking individual. And the thinking men and women of the state, Republicans and Dem Democrats - ocrats Democrats desire a continuance of the Phillips administration. Governor Phillips will not be a candidate for a third term - not to speak of a seventh term. He is not obsessed with the idea that there is no one 1 else in the state capable of filling the office of governor. Governor Phillips has served his term without friction with the leg legislature. - islature. legislature. He has no friction with the departments of the state gov government - ernment government where better service in those departments did not demand his criticism for the public gooa. There is a rapidly growing senti sentiment - ment sentiment in the state that the best ser service - vice service to the people in both the high highway - way highway depaartment and the Indus Industrial - trial Industrial department requires that Gov Governor - ernor Governor Phillips be given another term in order that he may make the nec necessary - essary necessary changes and improvements for the good of the w'hole people. When the previous governor left office in 1928 he made all the ap appointments - pointments appointments for the future that he could possibly fill so that he might to the greatest possible extent hand handicap - icap handicap Governor Phillips' administra administration - a - tion - a administration - a very unsportsmanlike pro procedure - cedure procedure to say the least. And it was also a procedure that handicapped the best interes s of the people al large throughout the state. In fact this procedure has proven a boom booml - l booml erang to the prospects of the pres present - ent present democratic aspirant. This as aspirant - pirant aspirant has used as his shibboleth words that if he is re-elected pros prosperity - perity prosperity will again return to this | state. Yet he appointed a bank examiner for four years in the fu future - ture future who has recently administered several disastrous bank failures. In no sense may bank failures be co coordinated - ordinated coordinated with prosperity in realty, let alone a mere shibboleth. Back to prosperity with Hunt means i back to the pie counter. And the
Two years ago the people of Arizona elected John C. Phillips governor of Arizona. It was the people of the state who put him in office, not the republican party, nor the democratic party, but the voters who had become dis disgusted - gusted disgusted with the way the affairs of the state were being administered under George W. P. Hunt, then governor. Under the form of government existing in the United States, the people occasionally use their ballots to retire officials who they have reason to believe are not making good. Two years ago the state of Arizona, with a democratic strength of approximately two to one, went to the polls and changed their governor. Hat; anything occurred to show there judgment erred? John C. Phillips has made a good governor. He did not go into the governor's chair on account of promises made. He received the votes of the people be because - cause because his reputation as being a square shooter was state statewide. - wide. statewide. John C. Phillips said that a man's political faith would not hold him on a job, nor cause him to be fired. If he was a competent employee his job was safe. As gov governor - ernor governor of the state he was looking after the interests and well being of all citizens- and not trying to build up a tax taxmoney - money taxmoney eating machine. The press of this state, with the exception of the daily papers which are about evenly divided politically, are in the main democratic. These democratic papers have been faithful to their party. Although they may have supported some demo democratic - cratic democratic opponent to the ex-governor in the primary election, they are working for the success of the party now. Does Mr. Hunt give these papers credit for their party loyalty? No; he does not. In his speeches to the voters in districts where he thinks the people are not posted he refers to the powers of the press being directed against him. He is probably peeved at the press in general, be because - cause because as a matter of news during the Phillips administra administration - tion administration it has published matters which have shown a better and square deal for the people. In making his campaign Governor Phillips has not promised prosperity, but he is right at the head of plans now being put in operation to secure work for men and women without jobs. That sort of action is better than a promise.
