Scattered strong thunderstorms developed across northwest Maricopa county during the afternoon hours on July 18th. Due to a significant infusion of tropical moisture from hurricane Dolores, the storms produced torrential rainfall with peak rain rates well in excess of 3 inches per hour; one of the communities that was especially hard hit by the heavy rain was Wickenburg. Heavy rain in the Wickenburg area began around 1630MST and continued through the evening hours; many flood control district rain gages in the area reported storm total rainfall amounts ranging from 3 inches to nearly 4.5 inches. The excessive rainfall led to episodes of flash flooding; according to the Department of Highways, at 1805MST U.S. Highway 60 was closed at milepost 111 due to the fact that the road was flooded and impassable. Earlier, at 1742MST a trained spotter 1 mile southeast of Wickenburg reported 2 inches of rain measured in 30 minutes which flooded area roadways. Additionally, another spotter 2 miles southwest of Wickenburg reported Cemetary Wash running with very heavy rapids and water was reported to be 2 inches deep across the front yard of some homes. At 1746MST heavy rain caused the Casandro Wash to rise to 6.7 feet which is above flood stage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported due to the flash flooding.
Fossil Creek Road (Forest Road 708) closed for several days due to damage from heavy rain and flooding that occurred on August 16th and 17th. Closure began morning of August 18th and remain closed for several week or more.
Four and a half (4.50) inches of rain fell over a four day period in Pine. Pine Creek was flowing over two low water crossings. The deepest was 10 to 18 inches on March 13.
Heavy rain fell across Northern Gila County. Here are some 24 hours rainfall amounts (inches):||Washington Park 3.72 |1 S Pine 3.28 |4 N Kohls Ranch 3.13|1 SW Washington Park 2.99 |4 NNW Star Valley 2.63 |1 E Payson 2.47 |Payson 2.21 |Young 2.03.
Heavy rainfall from strong thunderstorms produced areas of flooding in the Wickenburg area. Standing and running water was reported near the intersection of highways 93 and 60, not far from the center of Wickenburg. Rainfall rates up to three quarters of an inch per hour were also reported in the area.
