Description

Building 8 A-B (three-room residence, duplex, Type 3D) is a one-story, wood-frame, rectangular duplex resting on a 6"-wide concrete foundation. Concrete piers set inside the foundation and spaced at in- tervals support the floor joists. The overall dimensions of the building are x with two wings on the south (rear) facade that measure x each. Building 8 A-Bis clad with horizontal wood siding, and covered by a shingled, side-gabled roof with exposed rafter ends. There are two foundation vents on the east and west facades. The north (front) facade is symmetrical and each half of the duplex has an entrance flanked by a pair of windows. Both entrances have a simple porch covering, supported by thin metal rods set in a concrete stoop.

The original stoops were constructed of wood with square, wood columns for supporting the porch coverings. The south (rear) facade is also symmetrical with off-center entrances for each half of the duplex. A pair of stepped, concrete stoops provide access to the rear en- trances. There are louvered vents on the gables of the east and west facades. In the duplex had two evaporative-cooling units attached to the duct system on the east and west gable ends. Currently, the building is cooled by refrigeration units mounted on concrete pads on the east and west facades. Exterior ductwork connects the two units to the building's duct system. As originally constructed, the front and rear entrances to Building 8 A-B had wood stoops. On December 30, the H. P.

Adams Construction Company was awarded a contract for remodeling some of the buildings at the camp (Pfaff The concrete stoops and the current north (front) porch supports may have been constructed at this time. There are 26 windows on the building's facades. All original 6/6 wood-sash, double-hung windows have been replaced with 1/1 aluminum-frame windows. On the north facade, the western entrance is covered by a wood-frame screen door; the eastern entrance is covered by a metal security-screen door. The ex- terior doors on the south facade are not original. A satellite dish is attached to the northeast comer of the roof. Building 8 A-B was converted in from the barracks building sections moved from Yuma Army Air Field to the Wellton Government Camp site.

Yuma Army Air Field was activated in as a training base for aviation cadets. At the end of the war, the base was deactivated, and in Reclama- tion acquired both real and personal property at the inactive facility for use on its projects. Some of the buildings were used in the construction of the government camp at Wellton (Reclamation 1949a:22-23). Each half of the Type 3D temporary residence consists of three rooms: a living room, a bedroom, and a utility room. In addition, there is a kitchen/dinette and bath. The building has approximately 680 square feet of living space in each half, or an approximate total of square feet for the building (Reclama- tion Documentation for this report did not include visual inspection of the building's interior.

Wellton-Mohawk Irrigation System, Building 8 A-B (Duplex) HAER No. AZ-68-N (page 3) Pfaff previously described the remodeled, temporary, four-room residence as having wood floors covered with salvaged linoleum, plasterboard interior walls, new linoleurri countertops, Venetian blinds, and an evaporative-cooling system.
