Description
Building 12 A-B (four-room residence, duplex, Type 4D) is a one-story, wood-frame, rectangular duplex set on a 6"-wide concrete foundation. Concrete piers set inside the foundation and spaced at inter- vals support the floor joists. The building is clad with horizontal wood siding and covered by a shingled, side-gabled roof. Exposed rafter ends are visible beneath the extended eaves. Louvered openings at the gable ends ventilate the attic space. The south (front) facade is symmetrical, with the two entrances at the center sharing a porch overhang. The north (rear) facade has .two entrances at the center. There are two foundation vents on the east and west facades.
The overall dimensions of the primary building mass are x with a wing on the north (rear) facade that measures x The wing has a low- pitched, shingled roof. Originally, the front porch entry was constructed of wood with simple, square wood posts supporting the porch covering. A stepped, concrete stoop has replaced the wood porch entry and the support posts have been replaced by thin, metal rods set in the concrete stoop. Similarly, the original wood steps on the north (rear) facade have been replaced with concrete steps. Building 12 A-B has an open porch addition on the northwest facade that consists of a concrete pad and a porch covering supported by two wood columns. The concrete pad measures x The porch covering has a low pitch and is covered with roll- roofing material.
On December 30, the Adams Construction Company was awarded a contract for remodeling some of the buildings at the camp (Pfaff The current south (front) and north (rear) porch entries, and the covered porch addition may have been constructed under this contract. As originally constructed, the duplex was outfitted with two elevated evaporative-cooling units on the east and west facades. These units were replaced by ground-mounted air-conditioning units connected to the building by exterior ductwork. Two heating vents and four plumbing vents extend upward from the roof. Plan drawings for the Type 4D temporary residence show a total of 22 6/6 double-hung windows on the building's facades (Reclamation 1949a).
Building 12 A-B is one of four Type 4D temporary structures erected at Wellton Government Camp; however, a careful study of the building's exterior revealed that the building was constructed with- out windows on the east and west facades of the utility rooms. Currently, there are 17 1/1 aluminum- frame windows in use on the original building's facades. One of the original windows on the rear (north) facade of Unit A has been filled in with horizontal wood siding. The front entrances are covered by metal security-screen doors. The exterior doors on the north and south facades are not original. Wellton-Mohawk Irrigation System, Building 12 A-B (Duplex) HAER No.
