How the name was read

Each atlas was set in type by a different hand and scanned decades later, so the same establishment comes back spelled differently. Every reading below was produced by the recogniser from the sheets; none was corrected or invented. They are published so a search for any of them finds this page.

Named in the 1879 county history

The history of Lorain County was published 25 years before the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

Tlie churcii had jjreviously been named, at a meeting called for the purpose, the First Congregational Church of Ridgeville. The number of members now (January, 1870,) belonging to the church, is forty-seven. Chas. llerrick is clerk, and Henry D. Rogers, T. T. Winkles, Le Roy Race, Edward Ames, deacons. There is no settled pastor at present, but preaching is had once every Sabbath, by ministers from Oberlin. Job Lickerish is superintendent of the Sabbath school, which contains about one hundred and fifty scholars.

Provenance

Read by machine from the printed index of the Sanborn fire insurance atlases of Elyria, Ohio, held by the Library of Congress. Sanborn atlases published before 1930 are in the public domain. Only names that at least three of four independent readings agreed on are published, and no spelling has been corrected: what appears here is what the recogniser returned from the ink.
