How the name was read

Each atlas was set in type by a different hand and scanned decades later, so the same establishment comes back spelled differently. Every reading below was produced by the recogniser from the sheets; none was corrected or invented. They are published so a search for any of them finds this page.

Named in the 1884 county history

The history of Norfolk County was published 20 years before the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

Washington Street Methodist Episcopal Church. - The first attempt to establish a Methodist church in Brookline was in the early part of 1873. Three persons from other places saw an opening for, and the need of, a Methodist Church where people could worship in their own way in this town. They united with two others and purchased the building formerly belonging to the Harvard Congregational society, at the corner of Washington and School Streets, for the sum of twenty-four thousand five hundred dollars. manner, and dedicated to public worship soon after, and the Rev. E. D. Winslow, of Newton, was appointed by the New England Conference as their pastor. Bishop Simpson preached the dedication sermon from 1 John iv. 19. A Sunday-school was connected with this church of about one hundred members.

Provenance

Read by machine from the printed index of the Sanborn fire insurance atlases of Weymouth, Massachusetts, held by the Library of Congress. Sanborn atlases published before 1930 are in the public domain. Only names that at least three of four independent readings agreed on are published, and no spelling has been corrected: what appears here is what the recogniser returned from the ink.
