How the name was read

Each atlas was set in type by a different hand and scanned decades later, so the same establishment comes back spelled differently. Every reading below was produced by the recogniser from the sheets; none was corrected or invented. They are published so a search for any of them finds this page.

Named in the 1903 county history

The history of Hancock County was published 2 years after the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

The First Congregational Church was organized October 21, 1865, in Gage's Hall, by Rev. Robert McCune, of Kelly's Island. The society had its inception in the spring of 1865, through the disagreement of the members of the First Presbyterian Church over the further retention of Rev. J. A. Meeks as pastor of that body, those opposing that gentleman being subsequently upheld by the Presbytery. His friends then applied to the Presbytery for authority to organize a "Second Presbyterian Church," but the application was refused, the result of which was the secession of about forty-three members, with the old pastor, and the formation of the First Congregational Church.

Provenance

Read by machine from the printed index of the Sanborn fire insurance atlases of McComb, Ohio, held by the Library of Congress. Sanborn atlases published before 1930 are in the public domain. Only names that at least three of four independent readings agreed on are published, and no spelling has been corrected: what appears here is what the recogniser returned from the ink.
