A Sheriff Deputy dove into the water and brought Coty to shore where another deputy performed CPR. Coty was transferred to the hospital where he passed from his injuries three days later.

April 1993Tornado (F2)Port Charlotte1 hurt, $5,000,000A tornado moved through a residential area of Port Charlotte and moved rapidly northeastward causing a 2-mile path of destruction. In all, 69 houses were damaged, 17 of which were severely damaged and one was destroyed. A male resident of this house was cut on the forearm and received a hairline fracture of his foot as the roof was completely lifted off the structure. Promenades Mall was then hit, severely damaging a Bryons department store which will be closed for 5 months for repairs, a supermarket, a medical center, a motel and several other small businesses. Many trees were uprooted, fences damaged, screen enclosures and outbuildings were destroyed. A wind gust of 61 mph was observed at Punta Gorda Airport at 0147 EST. Damage was estimated at $1 million by the emergency manager.

Numerous trees were uprooted and snapped with at least 8 different vehicles picked up and moved.

An ambulance happened to be parked at the end of the street and paramedics got the boy's heart beating again. He was listed in critical condition at an area hospital with burn marks on his head, chest, and foot. The time of the event was estimated.

Also, 10,000 feet of a sea wall worth $2 million collapsed in Punta Gorda Isles and roads erosion closed two areas along County Road 74 near Westminster Road and Grove Blvd. Rainfall totals over the past three days totalled 9.49 inches in Point Lonesome and 8.35 inches 8 miles southeast of Punta Gorda.

A waterspout moved across Gasparilla Sound near Boca Grande Causeway before moving ashore near Placida as a short-lived EF-1 tornado with peak winds estimated around 110 mph. The tornado flipped a boat at a marina storage facility and damaged several others before moving into a manufactured home community where it damaged at least 35 homes. No injuries or deaths were reported. Damage estimates totaled around $500 thousand USD.

Other reported damage included trees and branches blown down and minor damage to soffit and fascia. The emergency manager also noted that this was the most significant ||Pictures were also relayed from broadcast media showing wind damage to the roof of a block walled commercial building. The pictures showed significant sections of the shingles and sub-roofing material were pulled up and deposited in the parking lot, resulting in water intrusion.

The tornado damaged the roofs of a few homes, a couple of carports and downed a few trees, power lines and large branches before it crossed into Sarasota County.

Winds were estimated to be around 65 mph. A Charlotte County Sheriffs deputy observed the tornado and it was also seen on video from the county administration building nearby.

Several trees were uprooted and power poles knocked down. A mobile home sustained minor roof damage, and the roof of a shed was blown 150 feet away. A central pivot irrigation rig was also twisted and damaged by the wind.

The damage was limited to areas where Kingsway, Edgewater, and Harborview cross U.S. Highway 41.

An emergency management storm survey found the damage to be about 20 yards wide and three blocks long. No injuries were reported but the tornado peeled back the roof of one home and damaged car ports and porches. A total of six mobile homes suffered damage.

The tornado caused minor structural damage to six mobile homes, three single level frame homes and ten smaller sheds or outbuildings.Most of the damage was confined to open carports, pool cages and shattered windows facing into the direction of the tornadic wind. A few trees and power lines were downed by the tornado before it lifted. A few of the downed palm trees were sheared half-way from the top by the tornadic wind.
