The church was designed by architects Calvin N. Otis and Calvin Fay, and was built by Daniel L. Cohen in St. John s was organized in as part of a new Episcopal diocese. Holding services in a temporary wooden structure beginning in the wardens and vestry began plans for a new church on the southwest trust lot of Jasper Ward in Working under Buffalo architect Otis, Calvin Fay (also from Buffalo but by then based in Savannah) supervised the former s design. With its buttresses, finials, lancet windows, and single central tower and spire, the stucco-covered brick building takes the form of a medieval English parish church and makes evident the rapid spread of the American Ecclesiological movement to the South. Its hammer beam roof is similar to that of St.

John s Church in Buffalo, designed by Otis in but no longer extant, which was considered the earliest example of such a roof in America. The chancel was added in and the central panel of the reredos was made by Calvert, Herrick and Riedinger of New York City, following drawings by the rector, William Dakin. The final statues were not completed until the The parish house behind the church was built in but significantly modified when it was transformed for its present use as a Lady Chapel and office space in the Across Charlton Street is Cranmer Hall, the educational building constructed in in a strikingly modernist style with ribbon windows but radically reconfigured to its present Gothic Revival form in by Greenline Architecture.

The fieldwork and measured drawings were prepared between and by students enrolled in Historic Preservation Recording and Interpretation under the direction of Richard K. Anderson, Professor, Department of Historic Preservation, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). See sheet 1 of 61 for a list of the students involved in the project. 1 Robin B. GA-1192 (Page 2) Professor Anderson transferred a group of partly finished HABS and HAER documentation, including this project, to the Heritage Documentation Programs (National Park Service) office in Washington, DC, in the mid-2010s. In HABS architect Mark Schara scanned the original ink-on-Mylar sheet set and transferred it to new HABS title block. The revised sheet set and original field notes were added to the HABS/HAER/HALS Collection at the Library of Congress later that year. Researchers should note that the sheet set did not undergo the usual final review process that Professor Anderson would have carried out. As such, there may be errors in the sheet set.

HDP staff members decided that there was value in adding the sheet set and field notes to the HABS Collection despite these potential deficiencies. Transmitter: Mary McPartland, HABS/HAER/HALS Collections Manager, June
