W. A. Hunt The Big Lick
The source of Lick Creek, proper, is what is generally called the Big Lick. Many an incident occurred here which gave much merriment and laughter among the old settlers, then living in this part of the county. It was a great place of resort for the wild game of the woods at that time, especially deer. (My informant states he saw seven one morning before breakfast, a pretty fair sight on an empty stomach indeed,) which would come and sup of the water that oozed from the sides of the low banks, water which seemed everlasting , and many an one was shot down by sporting men who then lived in this vicinity.

Storms near this place
5 since 2012Regional context, not property-specific evidence. The National Weather Service names Gridley in 5 storm reports between 2012 and 2020: 3 thunderstorm wind, 2 hail. No death or injury is recorded in these reports. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date opens the federal record of that event.
| When | Event | Place named | Harm | What the report says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June 2014 | Thunderstorm Wind | Gridley | $18,000 | Damage to trees, a shed, and barn doors due to damaging thunderstorm wind gusts was observed. Storm survey trained emergency management officials observed all damage aligned to the southeast with the path of the storm. After conferring with NWS officials, the damage evidence was indicative of straight line winds associated with the rear flank downdraft boundary observed on radar. The initial damage was observed near the intersection of County Road 300 East and 400 South and continued for approximately 2 miles to the southeast. |
| June 2015 | Thunderstorm Wind | Gridley | $5,000 | Trees and power lines were down at the intersection of State Route 236 and Rangeline Road due to damaging thunderstorm wind gusts. Traffic had to be rerouted. |
| June 2012 | Thunderstorm Wind | Gridley | $150 | Minor tree limbs were downed by strong thunderstorm wind gusts. |
