Population over time
2 figuresVermillion grew from 419 to 441 between 2010 and 2020. These are the recorded population figures Wikidata holds for this place, reached through the Geographic Names Information System number this page is keyed on rather than by name, so they belong to this place and not to another of the same name. Most are census counts, but not all are: an early figure may be a founding or settlement estimate, and an estimate published within five years of a census is left out. The change column is computed, and is left blank where more than 20 years separate a figure from the one before it, because a gap that long is not a change between two counts.

Murder Of Thomas Callaghan
On the evening of Saturday, August 26th, 1876, occurred a most atrocious crime, one that startled the people of Vermillion. This was the murder of Thomas Callaghan, a well known citizen and prosperous farmer. The crime was committed on the line between Vermillion and Rosemount, on what is known as the Hastings and Crystal lake road.

The village of Vermillion is situated in the center of the township, on the line between sections 15 and 22. In 1866, the Hastings and Dakota railroad was completed to Farmington. This road takes a course diagonally across the township from north-east to south-west. There was no station in the town, but the railroad company placed a platform for the accommodation of the people, and trains made regular stops. The first building erected was the blacksmith-shop of Peter Fishier, built in 1873, on the south-east quarter of section 15. He ran one fire; the building is now used for a barn.

Vermillion post-office was established in 1874, through the instrumentality of Major Kennedy, postmaster at Hastings, and Nicholas Klutz received the appointment of postmaster. The office is in his house. Previous to the establishment of this office, the inhabitants of the town received their mail at Hastings, Bosemount and Hampton.

The Vermillion elevator is located on the north half of section 22, and was erected in 1875, by Mr. Stowell. It is a wood building 16x40 feet, one and one-half-stories high, and has a capacity for five thousand bushels of grain. The grain is elevated by horse-power. The same price is paid here as at Hastings, and farmers save time by bringing their wheat to this elevator from which it is shipped over the Hastings and Dakota railroad. In 1 876, the elevator was sold to Adam Reiger, who run it until 1880, when it was leased by Kellogg and Lange, the present proprietors. Mr. Westfall is in charge pf the business. Near the building is the platform which serves the railroad in place of a depot.
