WOOSTER SITE OF FIRST DECORATED TREE IN 1847 Columbus - Ohio can take a bow for bigger and better Christmases now being enjoyed in the United States. It dates back to 1847 when it is believed the first Christmas tree was decorated at Wooster. Since then Ohioans have done much to embellish the Yuletide season. Thanks to an Ohioan named Thomas A. Edison millions of Christmas trees throughout the nation and world are safely decor decorated - ated decorated by electricity. Another Ohio Ohioan, - an, Ohioan, Benjamin Hanby, added joy to Christmas by writing the famous yuletide song, "Up On The House Top." Thirty years ago most toys found beneath trees usually bore the imprints "Made in Japan" or "Made in Germany." Two wars changed those labels. Now Santa Claus subcontracts much of his work to toy-making firms in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Akron, Urbana, and scores of other Ohio cities. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Maurer of Bowling Green and served six years in the army. Mrs. Maurer is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. J. P. Sheffield, of Pelham, Ga. She is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and is director of public* health nurses in Wood and San Sandusky - dusky Sandusky Counties. Observes 71st Wedding Anniversary Custar - Mr. and Mrs. Louis Haas, celebrated their 71st. wed wedding - ding wedding anniversary, Monday. Mr. Haas was 99 on November 11, and Mrs. Haas will be 89, April 22. Mr. Haas is not in good health and is bedfast most of the time. Their family consists of four sons, and three daughters. The following officers were elected for 1950: president, Mrs. Ruth Brescoll; vice-president, Mrs. New Organization Chamber of Com. Grand Rapids - The organiza organization - tion organization of a new civic group was completed last Tuesday at a meeting held in the town hall. The new organization will be known as the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, with Wilbur Tonjes as its first president. Other officers elected were: W. A. Grey, vice vicepresident, - president, vicepresident, and Walter Frazier, secretary. The committee on by-laws with Dr. Barr, chairman, made their report and was accepted. The membership consists of three classes, regular, retail merchants, and industrial and honorary. The charter is open to all adults in the area interested in civic work. Dues were set at $2.00 per year, and meetings will be held the first Tuesday in the month. Grand Rapids - Five persons were injured late Sunday when two automobiles collided at Lud Ludwig - wig Ludwig Road and U. S. Rt. 24 near here and struck another car park parked - ed parked at a gasoline station. In Defiance Hospital are Wil William - liam William A. Jones, 21, driver of one car, with a jaw fracture, and pos possible - sible possible back injuries, face and hand cuts, fractured pelvis, and his pas passengers, - sengers, passengers, Germain Marehal, 19, face and hand lacerations, and Al Alfred - fred Alfred Marchel, Jr., 14, fracture of facial bones, lacerated lips, thumb and a possible jaw fracture. All are from Defiance. Treated by a physician were Charles Wagner, 60, Whitehouse, driver of the second car, who suf suffered - fered suffered scalp and finger cuts, and Mrs. Betty Ryerson, 19, bruises. Mrs. Ryerson is the wife of Olin A. Ryerson, 22, Whitehouse, driver of the parked car. Patrolmen D. W. Ritter and Richard LaWarre of the Perrys Perrysburg - burg Perrysburg post, state highway patrol, said the accident happened when the car driven by Mr. Wagner turned on Ludwig Road as the vehicle driven by Mr. Jones was crossing the intersection. The impact of the collision threw the vehicles into the Ryer Ryerson - son Ryerson automobile, parked at Carl's Place, a service station. Mr. Ryerson was not injured.
