The structure is an example of 1930s era Colonial Revival style architecture of the Public Works Administration and displays design characteristics representative of the streamlined classicism associated with this The building fronts South Street, one of the two main arteries leading into Chardon, and just one block off the historic Public Square. The north side has a sunken basement entrance and brick chimney stack in the rear corner where the projection and center portion of the building met. The east, rear elevation featured the loading dock area and has been enclosed with a small wood sided addition to the building.

The rear of the lot is paved. The interior of the building retains a great deal of its original public spaces, materials and design treatments. The entrance vestibule, public lobby and Postmaster's office are all still intact. These spaces still feature terrazzo and hardwood flooring, marble wainscoting, oak woodwork, paneling and doors, original hardware, bulletin boards and signage. Entering the building through the semi-circular vestibule that features a honeycomb glass and wire ceiling with wood molding that goes into the public lobby. The Postmaster's office is located in the southwest corner off of the lobby. The first floor currently is office space. The original plan designated the first floor as the area for the mailing vestibule, work room, public lobby, Postmaster's office, stamp vault, restrooms and exit to the mailing platform.

In place are the original clearstory type sky lights, positioned over the work area above the heating ductwork. The sky lights have not been altered with the exception of glass replacement and are still functional, an additional means of lighting the current office spaces. The basement was originally used for the storage room, fuel room, boiler room, work room, as well as the Postmaster's closet and restroom. The door leading to the basement from the first floor is the original door with a honeycomb partial window. All roof and ceiling profiles were preserved, with the exception of two small basement offices. There are no drop or grid ceilings in the entire structure, the overhead HVAC duct work is exposed in the main office area and some basement areas. The original stamp vault has been retained and is currently being used as an office supply storage closet. Original postal boxes have been replaced with the same era boxes from a post office in Arkansas. The original boxes were removed when the building stopped serving as a Post Office. restored. In April of 1987 the original rear mail loading dock was enclosed, the exterior wall of the loading dock were covered with siding. In 2005 the siding was replaced with rough sawn cedar lap siding. At the time the loading dock was enclosed a coat room, interior rear hallway and small office were added to utilize the enclosed space. Central air conditioning was added at this time. A matching decorative block retaining wall, landing, floor drain and stairs leading to the basement level entrance (now to kitchen) have been added. The retaining wall is done in block that complements the color of the existing brick trim window surrounds.

The post offfice featured a federally sponsored wall mural that was painted by New York artist George Pickens in 1942 entitled "Maple Syrup Camp."The mural was removed when the building was closed as a post office and has been restored and moved to the The Eagle motif on the front of the building, a common symbol used in this type of Federal building, was removed during a previous renovation. The Chardon Post Office building is a significant local example of Depression-era federal architecture and specifically displays the design characteristics of the modern traditional interpretation of the Colonial Revival style associated with small town Public Works Administration (PWA) projects of this period The building is locally significant because it brings an awareness of the Federal presence in the Chardon area, as well as a reminder of the building activity that took place during the Depression-era as part of the PWA projects. Architecturally, the building represents a streamline, modern interpretation of traditional, classical architecture, specifically the Colonial Revival style.

The use of the Colonial Revival stylistic characteristics such as brick, hip roof, symmetrical façade, monumental entrance with central door with sidelights and transom as well as its scale, location and site, located just off of the historic public square, making it an important building that blends well with the 19t century buildings facing the Chardon Square. The construction of local post offices was one of the most visible examples of the achievements of the Federal Public Works Administration relief program.
