Evening Gazette carried an article on p. 34, May 21, 1975, regard- ing acceptance of the Salem Cross Inn, West Brookfield, Mass. for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The article repeated the tradition connecting the inn with Peregrine White of the Mayflower. This tradition has no basis in fact, for the Salem Cross Inn is associated with a White fam ily which descends from quite a different immigrant ancestor than Peregrine.
I dare say this will not affect the listing of the Inn in your Register, but before any publicityy is prepared on this new listing, I hoped you would look into this matter and be sure of your facts on the White connection. We will gladly share what information we have. Sincerely. X.W.shurman Ruth Wilder Sherman, F.A.S.G. (Fellow of the American Soc. of Genealogists) E. Smith 7-17-75 N.
