Statement of significance

Society of Friends, or Quakers, which was composed of 5 quarterly meetings in Pennsylvania, Ohio and the Indiana Territory. It was the first yearly meeting house west of the Alleghenies, and from it all of Quakerdom west of Ohio may be said to have sprung. American Quakers, especially in the South, for a haven from slavery and early as the 1650's, and William Penn made his colony the center for the procession of Friends into the southern colonies, but the stand of the sect Quakers began moving into the West in 1796 after the Ordinance of 1787 and the Treaty of GreeneVille in 1795 opened the area northwest of the come into the Miami Valley, but soon after others followed, settling in the Scioto Valley. In 1800 the great Quaker migration began, with the Short Creek, a few miles west of the Ohio River above Wheeling.
By the end of 1800, it is said, more than 800 Friends had moved into the Ohio country.
