Description of the property

- Moved Ruins - Unexposed (Check One) * Original Site The Colonel James Barrett Farm is located at no. 448 Barrett's Mill Road, two miles from Concord Center. The house faces south at a distance of fifteen feet from the street and is a typical New England farmhouse, of frame construction, two and one half stories high with a gable roof. Its present appearance is the result of various constructions, alterations, and additions dating from 1705 to the early twentieth century. The central portion of the house is the oldest. Its eastern end dates from 1705 and was originally a one-story, one room house. About 1720 the western end was built and a second story added to both sides. The result was essentially what we see now, a five bay wide, two and one half story facade with center entrance and large central chimney.

To the west of the main house is a three story wing, set back about eight feet from the main facade. It was built c. 1760 and is two bays wide with an entrance on the east side of the south front. Beyond this wing are two large, detached barns of apparent eighteenth century origin. They are in original, but very poor, condition. From the time of the addition of the wing, the appearance of the house did not change substantially until the mid-nineteenth century. At that time a long woodshed of one and one half stories was added to the east side and set back, like the 1760 wing, from the main facade of the house; this wing is presently in poor condition. Near the end of the nineteenth century various alterations wére made to the house. *The heavy window cornices of the eighteenth century portions of the house were removed, the windows enlarged, and' two over one sashes installed throughout.

A wooden door hood with elaborately turned brackets was added above the main entrance, the roof eaves were extended, ánd a chimney added to the north slope of the west wing roof. At that time too, the entire house was resheathed with clapboards: The interior of the house is remarkably intact in all rooms except the rear keeping room. Woodwork of fine quality exists in the panelling (1720) of the west front room, and in the exceptional featheredge sheathing on the stairway. There are uncased chamfered beams in the main rooms onthe first floor and beaded finished beams in the chambers above. The Colonel James Barrett Farm has been part of a local Historic District since 1961. The six acres of property included in the National Register are part of a working farm and include fields and old fieldstone walls dating to the eighteenth century. - Z

Statement of significance

Z - The Barrett House in Concord was the home of Colonel James Barrett, Revolutionary War patriot and one of the primary figures in the events leading up to and surrounding the British march on Concord and Lexington in April, 1775. Colonel Barrett was born in this house, built by his father in 1705; it was operated as a farm by both father and son for many years prior to the Revolution. Aside from farming, Col. Barrett was well known in the area for his membership in many of the county and state conventions and his participation in the Provincial Congresses. He was representative to the Massachusetts General Court every year from 1768 to 1777. In local affairs, Barrett commanded the militia regiment and super- intended the collection and deposit of military stores for the Massa- chusetts Committee of Public Safety. He used his own barn and outbuild.

ings as well as those of other Concord residents to store powder, flour, cannon, and other supplies necessary for military operations. The main objective of the British march on Concord, April 19, 1775gag was to arrest Col. Barrett and search his property. However, day before the British march, the Colonel received word of their plans and thus, the four companies that reached his farm on the nineteenth? found neither the arms, which had been carried off or well hidden on the property, nor the Colonel, who had gone to command the provincials then engaging the remainder of the British forces at the North Bridge. The British foray did net some cannon carriages and much time was spent in burning and otherwise destroying them. Col. Barret's wife, Rebecca, further detained the four companies searching the farm by offering them drink.

In this way they were kept from returning to the North Bridge and assisting the remainder of the Royal troops in their confrontation with the local militia. The rout that the British suffered at the Battle of the North Bridge was a turning point in the events of the day, putting the British on the defensive and forcing EGER their retreat to Boston. In 1779 the Colonel died at the age of 69,and his son inherited the house and property. The chain of inheritence from father to son continued until 1894 when the property was sold out of the family.
