DESCRIPTION CONDITION (Check One) Excellent Good Fair Deteriorated Ruins Unexposed (Check One) Altered Unaltered (Check One) Moved Original Site DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (if known) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE The T-shaped two-story brick farmhouse, built about 1836 by James W. Cochran, is five bays wide with a central doorway which has a simple transom.
The foundation is limestone which was obtained from Indian Creek on the property. Bricks were handmade and all lumber came from the property. Windows on the front facade (east) have stone lintels and sills and are 6 over 6. Many of the panes still have the original glass and most of them have shutters. The gable roof has a simple cornice and frieze. The frieze stops at the gable end. There are two inside end chimneys. In each gable end there are two small square windows, side by side. Windows in the rear portion of the house are also 6 over 6, but have brick fans instead of stone lintels. The rear portion, also gable roofed, has an inside end chimney. To either side of the rear portion, one story shed roofed additions have been built. Each addition contains a summer kitchen and an open porch. These additions are believed to be quite early. Most of the interior woodwork is walnut.
In the center hall there is a circular staircase which leads to the two bedrooms and small center hall above. On the first floor, the two front rooms have 12 foot ceilings. The center hall leads to a single center room (once the kitchen) and a back stairwell. There is one bedroom above the kitchen. All floors and woodwork are original. To the right and rear (north) of the farmhouse is a two-story limestone dairy and smoke house. The gable roofed building has two front doors, one above the other, on the east side. The exterior wooden stairway has been removed. There is another (this one arched) door, at ground level, on the south side of the building. There are four small rectangular windows, two (one above the other) on either side near the front (east) facade of the building. A small cupola on the roof once contained a bell. The rear of the building was used as a smokehouse.
The front half was for cooling milk. Also on the property are a wood bank barn which has a raised limestone foundation and rows of louvered openings and a wood corn crib and storage barn. Both barns are gable roofed. They settled in Hamilton County where they lived until 1825. They then moved to Butler County near Millville. William Cochran owned much property in the area and in 1821 purchased the Millville Mill which had been built by Joel Williams in 1805. William and Rebecca had three sons; one, James W. Cochran, later took over ownership of the mill and settled just west of the town of Millville. He married Mary June Hill and the couple had seven children. The youngest of these lived in the home until his death in 1946. The property is owned by his daughters. The house, dairy and barns, essentially unaltered, are a fine example of a mid 19th century farm group in southern Ohio. The property is presently in some danger from a proposed Cincinnati Gas and Electric Company transmission line which will run to the east (front side) of the house.
