Statement of significance

Jefferson A. Walters of Fayette County, Pennsylvania came to Ohio at age 20. He was the first student at Eclectic Medical College in The young physician courted and won Lucetta Brooks, only daughter of a his daughter's marriage. Dr. Walters opened his successful drug store disciple" of Clement L. Vallandigham, the famous anti-war advocate of his trials. He often served as his spokesman particularly while Vallandigham was in jail and during his subsequent exile by President Lincoln to the Confederacy. Vallandigham escaped immediately to publication of Speeches, Arguments, Addresses and Letters of Clement L. Vallandigham in 1864. his forced retirement and in later years Walters devoted much time to his lifelong interest in philosophy and history. After his recovery he returned to business activity. He served as a director and president age of 88. Mrs.

Lucetta Walters owned the house until her death when it passed to her daughter, Mary Walters Woodhull who sold it in 1920. It was moved to new quarters. The house is a fine example of an early Victorian Italianate townhouse one of few remaining in Dayton.
