Solomon Gould was head carpenter. The two story frame dwelling measures approximately thirty-five by twenty feet. An addition has been constructed at the rear (south side). The house has a five bay front, and the front (north side) door is located in the center of the first floor.

The doorway is deeply recessed and has a rectangular transom. The windows originally had small panes, but were replaced with large, single panes. The exterior is sided with narrow weather-boarding. The addition at the rear measures approximately twenty-five feet square. The interior of the house is a primitive interpretation of a two-story New England colonial house with a center hall. The hall, with its large walnut staircase, separates two large front rooms each with a large fireplace. The east room, a parlor, opened onto a garden. Another large room was used as a kitchen and dining room. The kitchen is now located at the rear of the house in the addition. There originally were two large rooms upstairs; now this floor is divided into four bedrooms. Both the interior and exterior have been little modified, with the exception of the addition at the rear.

In the winter of 1830-31, the McPherson home burned and the family moved into a frame house opposite the site of their cabin where they stayed until the present two-story frame house was built in 1831.

When McPherson was thirteen years old, his father became ill and James went to Greenspring, about five miles south of Clyde, to work in a general store and thus help support his family. In the fall of 1848, McPherson entered Norwalk Academy where he studied for two years in preparation for entering West Point. He graduated from West Point in 1853, first in a class of fifty-two cadets among whom were Philip H. Sheridan, John M. Scofield and John B. Hood. McPherson taught at West Point for a year just after graduation. Then he spent six years working with the Army Engineers in New York and San Francisco. With the outbreak of the Civil War, McPherson applied for, and was granted, a transfer to the war zone. He advanced very rapidly, becoming a lieutenant-colonel on November 21, 1861; colonel on May 1, 1862; and brigadier-general of volunteers on May 15, 1862.

From there he was transferred to the staff of General Grant as chief engineer of the 17th Army Corps. He played important roles in major battles and was a vital figure in the siege of Vicksburg. McPherson was killed at Atlanta in a fierce battle on July 22, 1864. He was buried across from his home in Clyde in what had been the family orchard. This house is the most important structure associated with McPherson's life. It was here that he was reared and it remained his only permanent home until his death. Although he did not live in Clyde after going away to work at the age of thirteen, he returned many times to be with his family during vacations and furloughs. 9.
