Description of the property

Stockbridge Casino is located at the corner of East Main Street and Yale Hill Road in a residential section of Stockbridge just east of the town center. The front elevation faces Main Street, and a gravel driveway and parking area run to the west and north of the building. The Casino was built in 1887-1888 according to the design of McKim, Mead and White and is a two-story, wood frame structure with a hip roof. It sits on a concrete foundation which extends about four and one-half feet above grade and a full basement is below. Originally located at the opposite end of Main Street at the northwest corner of West Main and Sergeant Streets, the Casino was moved to its present site in 1928. In its new location the building is situated in an identical relationship to its adjacent streets, with the long dimension of the basic rectangular plan continuing to face Main Street.

In the original location two tennis courts separated the building from the street, whereas now a lawn stretches between the Casino and Main Street. At the time of its move in 1928, alterations were made to the building in order to enable it to serve more adequately as a playhouse. However, the concept of the front elevation is not dramatically different from the original Casino building. The hip roof, cupola, and two dormers are unchanged, although a masonry chimney, originally located to the right of the cupola was removed. sits in the center of the roof ridge and is supported by eight round columns and surrounded at its base by wood balustrades. In the center of the front elevation is a two-story entrance portico with four simple columns. The original double-door entry was set back in the center bay of the portico. After the move, this portico was fully enclosed with paneled wood and glass for use as interior space. The entrance for the building was moved to the east elevation facing Yale Hill Road. To both the left and right of the central portico at the second-floor level are three shuttered windows with eight over eight sash. Beneath these windows, where originally the secondary entry doors to the casino were located, are new exit doors from the theater. These are double doors which open out onto a wood frame porch, from which access to grade is provided by a wide straight run of stairs. One window at the first-floor level adjacent to the left of the old portico has been removed.

The only other alteration was the removal of a broad entry porch which ran across approximately three-quarters of the total front elevation and served as a substructure of the original portico. The east elevation, although altered to accommodate the main entrance of the playhouse, still maintains the original symmetrical design. Three pairs of doors at the first-floor level are reached by seven steps which lead to a broad porch. Above each pair of doors are double casement windows, each divided into eighteen lights. Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT McKim, Mead and White STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The Stockbridge Casino is significant as the work of McKim, Mead and White and as the center of Stockbridge culture and entertainment for nearly a century. The building was constructed in 1887-1888 and was designed by the outstanding architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White. Other works by the firm include the Casino at Newport (1888), the Boston Public Library (1895), the University Club in New York (1900), and Pennsylvania Station in New York (1906). The Stockbridge Casino displays the characteristic classic motifs employed by Mckim, Mead and White. The handsome cupola, curved pedimented dormers, slender Doric columns, deep eaves, dentils and other features add a distinctive feeling to the building traceable to the Queen Anne style of the period.

The Stockbridge Casino was owned by the Stockbridge Casino Company, a social club of the area's summer "cottagers." The club was organized by such prominent res- idents as David Dudley Field, Jr., lawyer; Henry Dwight Sedgwick, lawyer and writer; and Joseph Hodges Choate, jurist and diplomat. The building was a ¡casino" in the older sense of the term, having been established as a "place for a reading-room, library, and social meetings." For forty years it offered its members tennis, billiards, dances, theatricals, and lectures throughout the summer seasons, and gained recognition for its outstanding art exhibitions.

In 1926, after a period of decline in the years following the First World War, the Casino Company sold the property to Mabel Choate, who wished to move the Mission House (home of the first missionary to the Stockbridge Indians and now a National Historic Landmark) from Prospect Hill to Main Street. There was, however, reluctance to see so distinguished a building torn down, and a group of local citizens -- led by Walter Clark, president of the Grand Central Art Galleries of New York; Austen Fox Riggs, psychiatrist; and Daniel Chester French, sculptor - acquired land at the foot of Yale Hill and moved the Casino to its present site. The Three Arts Society was formed to assume ownership of the Casino building "for the prosecution among other things of such exhibitions as will promote the arts of music, drama, painting, and sculpture . . .

and for the dissemination of educ- ational instruction .. . ." For a number of years the Society continued the tradition of annual art exhibitions, but from its first production in 1928, the Berkshire Playhouse, as it was soon called, became increasingly famous as a summer theater. First under the management of the Three Arts Society and more recently under the Berkshire Theatre Festival, the Playhouse has staged hundreds of pro- ductions, from revivals to the new and experimental, and has presented such out- standing actors as Katharine Hepburn, James Cagney, Ethel Barrymore, Lillian Gish, Tallulah Bankhead, Thornton Wilder, Ann Bancroft, Julie Harris, Al Pacino, Frank (continued) 9

Portions of this wall were moved out several feet to provide additional interior space, and a number of porch entrances and miscellaneous attachments have been added. On the west elevation at the second-floor level are two eight over eight sash windows positioned symmetrically near the corners of the building. At the first floor are two doors, one leading to the basement. 'ToUE9 On the interior of the building on the first floor is an entrance lobby and ticket booth, beyond which is the main theater. The raised stage area is on the west end of the building. Above the lobby are administrative offices and the theater balcony is located above the rear portion of the first floor seating. Lighting equipment, the lighting control booth, and additional mechanical equip- ment are located in the attic space.

At the basement level are a number of small rooms used for storage, dressing rooms, and other theater purposes. #8: Langella, Ruth Gordon, Eva Le Gallienne, Shirley Booth, and Jane Wyatt. Thus, for the past eighty-seven years the Stockbridge Casino has contributed significantly to the architectural and cultural life of Stockbridge.
