Description of the property

The Bigelow Carpet Mill is located on Union Street in Clinton. It consists of a complex of six interconnected buildings set on approximately nine and one half acres of land. Building #5 is separated from the others by School Street but can Be tea ched b nelerated w l naxed dennly seomled residenti a1 ay a 1tes to battn. north of the mill, while a mixed residential commercial area taces it to the Other mill buildings are located on its eastern edge, and open space on its west. The mill was constructed over a seventy-five year period from 1847 to 1922. Its original dimensions were 100' by 42'. This space was doubled in 1850 and enlarged again in 1852 with a 50' ell. Other mill buildings were constructed in 1855 and 1857 and a dye house and reservoir in 1860. By 1876 the mill consisted of ten distinct structures linked in a huge G.

This complex which had evolved as the mill expanded was consolidated in the 1880's when it began to assume its present form. The buildings which now comprise the mill are all rectangular in plan but vary in tresses and corbelling, form the focal point. All three are two stories in height with round arched windows in the upper level. The other buildings, also constructed of brick are more functional in design. The interiors of all six buildings, consisting of colums, beams, and flooring, are wood. Building #1; erected in 1886, is two stories in height and contains 51,675 square feet. A central gable on a flat roof provides a small attic space. Thhe south-east elevation contains the main entrance, which is set in a wide arch.

It is flanked by buttresses and surmounted by a triple arched window on the second floor and an elaborate stepped gable containing a large segmental window flanked by quarter round windows lighting the attic. There are three bays to the right of the entrance and two to the left. Each contain segmental arched windows on the first floor and round arched on the second, separated vertically by buttresses & horizontally by recessed panels. The corbelled cornice is trimmed with granite. A round 2 story tower is attached to the southern corner of the building. The tower and the other elevations continue many of the decorative motifs of the main elevation. The major alteration to this building is the replacement of its original sash. Building #2 was originally constructed in 1855 then rebuilt in 1885. It is two stories in height and contains 61,042 square feet.

The upper floor of this flat roofed building is lit by a pitched skylight. It continues the design elements of Building #1 and is accentuated by towers at its juncture with Buildings #1 and #3. The tower at the corner of Building #1 is crenellated and is three stories in height. The tower at the corner of Building #2 is also three stories high and is capped by a hip roof between four corner piers. The upper floor is lit by round arched windows and decorated with elaborate corbelled and recessed brick patterns. As with Building #1, the original sash has been replaced. Form No. 10-300a (Rev.

It is also two stories high but contains only 24,276 square feet. This building presents a slight variation to the decorative theme established by the other two. Although it con- tains the same number of stories, it 15 slightly taller and much narrower. Its buttresses are not broken at their mid-point by a talse head as are the others, tending to emphasize the verticality of this section. Verticality is further stressed by replacing the wide segmental windows on the first floor with narrow elongated round arched openings which are presently bricked in.

The other windows have had their sash replaced. Building #4 consists of two distinct sections, both very simply designed. The eastern portion, built in 1922, is five stories high and contains 57,500 square feet. Its eleven bay southwestern elevation is connected to building #1 by an elevated walkway at the third story level. The southeastern elevation is similarly connected to building #5 at the fourth story level. Fenestration consists of paired 6/6 sash on the three upper floors and paired fixed 6 pane sections over 9 pane awning windows on the lower floors. All have granite sills and are set in segmentally arched openings. Simple uninterrupted piers divide each bay. The western portion, built in 1903, is only one story high and contains 40,700 square feet. This monitor roofed section has the same type of sash found on the lower floors of the eastern section.

The windows are divided by simple piers with corbelled caps. Building #5 is by far the largest in the complex. It is five stories high and con- tains a total of 145,500 square feet. Its northern and southern elevations contain 31 bays, while the eastern and western elevations contain 7. The three southern bays of the western elevations are blocked in. Fenestration consists of paired 6/9 double hung sash on the fifth floor and paired 9/9 double hung sash with a fixed six pane section above on the second, third, andfourth floors. Window openings on the first floor have been blocked in. As was the case with building #4, the windows have granite sills and are set in segmentally arched openings. The bays are also divided by uninterrupted piers with corbelled caps.

Building #6, which stands at the western edge of the complex, was built in 1876, making it the oldest remaining section which has not been extensively rebuilt. The main structure is two stories high with a low pitched gable roof containing 46,000 square feet. A wooden one story gabled attic runs north-south along the ridge of the main structure. This narrow addition butts onto a flat roofed rectangular addition, also of wood, on the southeast corner. On the eastern half of the southern elevation the brickwork of the main structure is carried up to mask the wooden additions. Fenestration on the additions consists of double hung 6/6 sash. Fenestration on the main structure is 12/12 on the second floor and 8/8 on the first floor double hung sash with granite lintels set in segmentally arched openings.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT The Bigelow Carpet Mill is significant for its associations with Erastus B. Bigelow, a mechanical genius who helped to revolutionize the textile industry in America. It is also significant as an intact group of buildings still used for an industrial purpose. Bigelow (1814-1879) developed a series of power looms that brought mechanization to weaving operations so complex that they had previously been relegated to hand labor. His stature in the textile industry is demonstrated by the fact that of fifty patents hereceived in his lifetime, forty were obtained for improvements in looms. his more notable contributions were power looms for weaving coach-lace (1837), knotted counterpanes (1838), ginghams (1845), and wire cloth (1857). Bigelow was best known, however, for his invention of the first machines for weaving carpets.

He began with the Lowell Manufacturing Company where he developed power 1ooms for weaving in-grain carpeting by 1842. Starting in 1845, he turned his attention to the mass production of Brussels carpets, patenting the first power loom for this purpose in 104, then patenting a machine for weaving tapestry Brussels carpeting 1n 1850. In addition, between 1851 and 1857, he obtained six patents for power looms for pile and cut pile carpeting. During this period, in 1849, Bigelow joined with his brother Horatio in the firm of H.N. and E.B. Bigelow to manufacture Brussels carpeting on his newly developed looms. For this purpose, they took over a small one story building that Horatio had built in 1847 as a real estate investment. With the increasing perfection of Erastus' machinery, the company grew and prospered.

Its capital had risen to $160,000 by 1854 when the brothers incorporated as the Bigelow Carpet Company. By 1875 capital gains had reached $1,000,000. During this period of financial expansion, the mill was also expanding physically. After Bigelow's death in 1879, the company continued to grow and prosper. The corporate managers who succeeded the Bigelow brothers sought to create an architectur- ally unified group of buildings to house the mill's activities. The complex which emerged by the end of the 19th century embodied many of the latest developments in industrial architecture, including brick post and beam construction, large expanses of windows, and the use of high Victorian detail.

Its condition was deteriorating when the Nylon Products Co.

(Nypro) began looking at the possibility of rehabilitating it in the early '70's. The 150,000 square feet of usable space looked increasingly attractive to them when their plans for a new modern manufacturing facility proved too expensive. They purchased the buildings in 1972 and have found that their rehabilitation of the main core has successfully met their requirements.
