Description of the property

The Dr. Edgar Everett Dean House is located at 81 Green Street in a residential area of Brockton. The Dean House was designed by Wesley Lyng Minor and built in 1884. It is a 2½ story building with a I-plan or irregular massing. The structure is sheathed in a variety of materials. The first and second stories consist of clapboards separated by a butt-end flored belt. The third story has both regular and imbricated patterns of shingles. A course of tongue and groove between the second and attic floors acts as an entablature. Fenestration is 1/1 of varying sizes. The multiple peaks of the slate roof are topped by finials. The facade faces south on Green Street. A two-story three-sided projecting bay extends at the eastern end of the facade. It is topped by a gable, stepped out in medieval style, with two recessed windows, creating an open porch supported by turned posts.

The upper roof level has a pedimented gable dormer at the western end of the roof. A one story porch with balustrade and a shed roof supported by turned posts extends along the entire facade and turns in a northerly direction to the southern end bays of the east and west elevations. The east elevation has a two story, three-sided projecting bay with French doors at the first floor level at its northern end. It is topped by a stepped gable in medieval style with two recessed windows. S curve brackets. A one story porch with turned posts occupies the northern end of the elevation. A pedimented gable with a sawn wood screen-like ornament tops the east elevation. The west elevation has a 2½ story, three-sided projecting bay topped by a stepped gable in medieval style with one recessed window. The gable is supported by S curve brackets.

A nine light occulus interrupts the belt course just below the second story window. An oriel at the second story level rounds the corner from the facade to the west elevation. A triple six light casement located on the second story level stands at the northern end of the elevation. A pedimented gable with a sawn wood casement tops the west elevation.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT Wesley Lyng Minor The Dr. Everett Dean House is an outstanding example of the Queen Anne style. Built in 1884 and designed by Wesley Lyng Minor, the Dean House is the earliest known house designed by Minor in Brockton. As the leading late 19th century architect in Brockton, Minor designed the Brockton City Hall (NR). He began his training in the late 1860's in New Bedford as an apprentice carpenter to his father, John Wesley Minor. At the same time he studied drawing and architecture with Professor Hamblin, a retired architect. Minor then worked for James McArthus, Jr., architect of the Philadelphia City Hall, and later for Richard Morris Hunt in New York City. Minor settled in Brockton in 1882 and became the architect for many of the city's finest buildings. Among these are the W.L. Douglas House, Bixby Block (NR), and the Gardner J. Kingman House (NR).

The house was built for Dr. Edgar Everett Dean, a prominent physician. Dr. Dean was born in Easton and received his education at town schools, the Bristol Academy in Taunton, and Harvard Medical School, graduating in 1861. After first practicing in Boston, he moved to Brockton (then North Bridgewater) and took over the practice of Alexander Hickborn. Dr. Dean was also very active in Brockton politics. He was originally an ardent Republican but became a Democrat when his close friend, General Benjamin F. Butler of Lowell changed to that party. Dean ran twice unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for Congress. In 1882 he was elected to the Board of Aldermen from Ward I. In 1885 he was appointed to the Board of Health by Major J.J. Whipple. He returned to the Republican Party in 1888.

When General Butler was elected governor, Dean was appointed' to a three year term on the State Board of Health. The house is now occupied by the Hall Funeral Home, the oldest continually operating funeral parlor in Brockton, established in 1827.
