Description of the property

Built C. 1870, the buildings located at 23-29 South Park Place, are good examples of commercial architecture of this period. Statement of significance

The Courthouse Square and surrounding commercial area are important for both historic and architectural reasons. Historically, the Courthouse Square has been the governmental and commercial center of Newark. Architecturally, it is a well preserved example of a mid nine- The Ohio & Erie Canal opened in Newark in the 1830's and the railroad between 1852-1855, both within two blocks south of the courthouse square. These developments attracted further four identical facades.
