Description of the property

The Buckingham-Petty House is a large ell-shaped residence in brick, set on a stone the most distinctive decorative feature is the huge Doric frieze of wood which extends on all parts of the house except the garage addition. pended ceiling was hung, in one room, but did not destroy the original plaster croun in an upstairs bedroom. Most of the original molded 8-panel "double cross doors" with brass escutcheons by North and Stanley remain. The Buckingham farm originally contained all 640 acres of Section 19. Today much Condition ruins unexposed unaltered 7. Description of that property is used as a golf course.No historic outbuildings remain.

Statement of significance

(in one paragraph) residences in Wayne Township, and while it would compare favorably with any period house, the architectural scarcity of the Greek Revival in this rural area makes it all the more north about 10 miles), now part of Zanesville, for many years, but early rural residences were almost exclusively traditional or vernacular in character. This fine structure, by contrast, with its porticos, classical ornament and proportions, stands out as an unusual example of elite architecture. The house was built under the ownership of Alvah Buckingham (1791-1867) a New York native who became one of the leading citizens of Putnam, Ohio.
He was a well-known mer- in the city of Chicago, and several years later contracted with the Illinois Central Rail- The farm in Wayne Township was occupied primarily by Alvah Buckingham's son, James the spring of 1853 he located on the farm where he lived until 1863. In 1854 he invented During the Civil War, Morgan's Raid, which reached a point only 10 miles below the farm, caused him to move back to Putnam with his family. In the 1860s, the property, which under the ownership of the Buckinghams had included the entire section, passed to Rev. Ludwell Petty (1808-1893). He had entered the ministry later lived on the old farm. The younger Petty had entered the ministry in 1852 and served and the D.D. by Allegheny College.

As a youth he worked on his father's grain elevator in Chicago, but in a system of cogs for driving mowing and reaping machinery, but never secured a patent.
