Description of the property

brick construction, laid in common bond and resting on a sandstone foundation. L-shaped in plan, the structure is comprised of a 42'x32' rectangular block tains four bays, and is symmetrically arranged with a handsome trabeated doorway (photos 1 and 2) with transom and sidelights and a main door with a glass upper this small-scale dwelling is its fine portico, designed in the very best traditions at each side of the door, set perpendicular to the house, are two porch benches portico are two tall windows, flat arched, 4/4, with low pedimental hoods. intact completely around the house, on the main portion as well as on the ell. At the north side of the rear elevation is located the ell described above, one with a slate roof through which break two inset gable-end chimneys at the north and south elevations.

Statement of significance

(in one paragraph) The Brendel House is nominated as one of only three remaining Gothic Revival residences in the city of Lanesville, and, indeed, as the finest of these three. The Gothic Revival movement arrived late in Zanesville, the Greek Revival having time a particularly popular style in Zanesville; architectural fancy seems to have lept directly from from the formalism of the Greek Revival to the eclecticism unaltered exterior and interior, is clearly Zanesville's finest example of the Gothic Revival cottage. The house was built for Charles Brendel (1833-1911) a local merchant who had a shoe store in the city for many years.
Under Brendel's ownership, the tax records for 1867 list "$1500 added--brick house." 1600-1699 1400-1499 1867 1700-1799 commerce architecture Period transportation industry education economics conservation engineering humanitarian invention literature science 8.
