Description of the property

The H.S. McClelland House is a 3-story brick structure, rectangular in shape, set The main doorway is one of the finest features of the house, with a single door with Leaded plate glass, flanked by. Leaded glass sidelights and crowned with a delicate, neo- Adamesque semi-elliptical fanlight, also of leaded plate glass, typical of the period. extends from the west side of the rear elevation, and houses a breakfast area on the Revival, with its characteristic symmetry and relatively simple shape. The interior is essentially unaltered from the original and contributes greatly to and is done in light pastels. Originally, the ceilings had floral patterns painted on moldings. No partitions have been erected to detract from the original plan of the house.

Statement of significance

(in one paragraph) local art pottery industrialist in Zanesville, Ohio, long-recognized as the inter- national art pottery center. Architecturally, the house, with its simple rectangular massing, gently sloping root, dormers, classical ornament, and neo-Adamesque entry, is characteristic of the Colonial Revival. Further, its generally intact interior featuring the broad stair hallway, the architrave-framed doors, and overall detail significantly con- in many areas, its occurrance in Zanesville is scant, and is generally limited to who worked for Harry McClelland at the Zane Pottery Co.
