Statement of significance

(in one paragraph) The Sheltering Arms is a memorable example of the evolution and development of a medical facility that started in a home to become a fully accredited hospital. Recently its name was changed to that of 0'Bleness Memorial Hospital in honor of Charles O'Bleness, President of the Security Bank of Athens. The development of Sheltering Arms was direct and vigorous. By the early 1930's there were over 30 beds, 46 beds in 1946, and in the 1960's Sheltering Arms was a fully Charles G. O'Bleness Sheltering Arms Hospital on Union Street. Local medical history is closely linked to the Sheltering Arms, Dr. John W. Rollins Sprague, whose offhand remark initiated the hospital came from a family that settled over 17 physicians, surgeons and dentist that came from the Athens area branch of the Sprague family, including three children of Dr. John W. R.

Sprague.
