Smith House is a three-story brick dwelling, set on a sandstone foundation and capped with a roof of intersecting gables.
The facade features a two-bay configuration, pierced with a segmental-arched void at the entrance. The first story is also distinguished by paired round-arched windows with heavy, rock-faced stone heads, typical of the Richardsonian mode. Some corbeled brickwork is evident on the facade, suggesting influences from the Queen Anne style. The third floor is lit by semi-circular voids on the facade and east elevation. On the east elevation is a 2-story bay window capped with a semi-hexagonal roof. The interior of the Smith House has been heavily vandalized and none of the original woodwork or staircase remains. There are no extant outbuildings associated with the property.

C. Lindsay, architect STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The William Smith House is nominated for its architecture, as the work of an important local architect, Henry Clay Lindsay. Lindsay (1845-1902) was a Zanesville native and the son of a contractor, Thomas Lindsay. H. C.
Lindsay began his career as a contractor himself, but by 1875 was identified by the title "architect" in city directories. For the next twenty-eight years he practiced in Zanesville, but his work was known in most parts of the state. He designed scores of buildings--residential, commercial, and industrial--including the National W. R. C. Home in Madison, Ohio, listed individually on the National Register, schools and churches in Newark, Ironton, Sandusky, Cambridge, educational buildings for Wilberforce College, three factories for the U. S. Baking Company in Columbus, Ohio, Louisville, Kentucky, and Evansville, Indiana. He was clearly the most prolific architect that Zanesville ever produced. Stylistically, Lindsay generally worked in some variation of the Richardsonian Romanesque mode.
Those few commercial buildings in Zanesville which remain from his hand, reflect this, as does the William Smith House. He designed the home for Smith in 1894. Smith was a local grocer who began his business in the city ca. 1882 and continued through the early years of the twentieth century. His house clearly reflects the work of its architect, with the heavy round-arched stone trim around the principal voids on the facade. This is the only remaining house by Lindsay in the southeast side of the city. Although the interior of the house has been heavily vandalized, this structure does represent the work of an extremely important local architect. Presently, the city of Zanesville has committed $35,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds for the rehabilitation of the structure.
Plans call for a careful restoration of the exterior coupled with the adaptive re-use of the interior as a community center, following the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. 9 MAJOR BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES Zanesville City Directories: 1880-1910.
