UTM: 19 282890 4661600 Quad:BL (Staple additional sheets here) Form#46-45 ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Richard Sayles House is a unique local example of Federalist archit- ecture, noteworthy both for its high-quality design and its fine granite construction. The house is nearly square in plan with two interior-chimneys and stands two-stories high with a hip roof.
The facade (south) is symmetrical about a center entry which contains a panelled door surmounted by a semi- circular light (blocked) and framed by a projecting granite surround that rises to a keystone. Originally the entry had a three-sided stoop. SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Although the Sayles House is known to possess historical associations with Richard Sayles, its owner after ca. 1852, its original ownership is currently unknown, although its exceptional Federalist design suggests that it was built for oneof Uxbridge's prominent mercantile families or early manufact- urers, perhaps the Caprons.
The house's estimated date of construction is based both on its design and on the use of similar stonework in the constructic of the Crown & Eagle Mills at North Uxbridge in 1823-1827 (Form #47-B). Richard Sayles (1819-1887) was a native of Gloucester, Rhode Island, who, as a child, was sent by his family to work on a farm. At the age of 16 he moved to Providence, Rhode Island, to work as a clerk in a grocery store, a position he occupied until 1840 when he usedhis savings to pay for a year's education at Uxbridge Academy. Between 1841 and 1844, Sayles was an employee of the Uxbridge Woolen Company and between 1844 and 1847, he owned and operatec the grocery store in which he had previously worked at Providence.
In 1847, Sayles returned to Uxbridge and to the employ of the Uxbridge Woolen Company, until 1852 when he went to work for Moses Taft, supervising the construction and equipment of the Central Woolen Mill (Form #46-D). Upon the mill's completion Sayles and his brother-in-law, Israel Southwick leased the property and manufactured woolen goods until 1859 or 1861 when they sold their lease and business to Bradford, Taft & Co.. Sayles continued as agent and superintendant of the mill during the Civil war, when large governmen orders required around-the-clock production.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Flanking the entry are four windows set in undecorated granite surrounds with projecting sills and flush lintels. The stone work. of the facade consists of blocks which have been matched for color and size to be laid symmetrically about the entry. Side elevations are undecorated and possess four windows at each storey. The house sits on a carefully terraced site which slopes to a fine, hammered granite retaining wall along Mendon Street.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE His health reportedly damaged by this demanding work schedule, Sayles suffered partial paralysis in early 1864; after recovering, Sayles leased the Laurel Ridge Woolen Mill at Burrillville, Rhode Island in April of 1864 and in May of 1864, he bought the Rivulet Mill (Form #56-A) with his brother- in-law, David McBride. Sayles continued to own the Rivulet Mill under var- ious partnerships until the time of his death. Of Sayle's non-business activities, little is known except that he was a major donor and chairman of the building committee for the North Uxbridge Baptist Church (Form #57-163), although he was a Unitarian in his personal beliefs. Soon after Sayles's death, this house was sold to the Calumet Woolen Company, which probably used it for workers' housing.
The Richard Sayles House possesses integrity of location, design, materials, setting and workmanship, as well as historical associations with Richard Sayles, a local wool manufacturer. In addition, the house possesses a unique Federalist design, finished entirely in hammered granite ashlar. The Sayles House meets criteria A, B and C of the NRHP. 4 OWNER Philippe J.
