GIVE A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF HISTORIC IMPORTANCE OF MONUMENT. (Refer to the theme circled on front of form. What happened? Who was important? Comment) This 1729 milestone is one of two known milestones in the town; the other dates from 1810 and is found on Boylston Street, near Warren, next to an MBTA bus shelter.

This milestone shows a distance of 5 miles to Boston; at that time the route would have been through Brookline Village and over Roxbury Neck since the milldam and its road did not yet exist. The milestone was placed by Paul Dudley, a naturalist and justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court. It has been moved several times; at one point it was a doorstop at the second Charles Stearns house which was built c. 1825 near the corner of Sewall Avenue and Stearns Road. When it was discovered, it was set at the corner of those two streets, but later moved to its present location on the property of the United Parish (formerly Harvard) Church. It was stolen from this location once but returned. The Harvard Street milestone meets NR criteria A and marks an early transportation land route from Cambridge to Boston before the filling in of the Back Bay.
