Comm, Date2/77: rev, by H, White 3/86 IATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Samuel Farquhar House one of the finest examples of the Mansard cottage house form in Newton, and its elaborately patterned, polychrome slate roof exhibits the skills of Samuel Farquhar, a local slater and occupant of the house; therefore the Farquhar House meets Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. Slate set in bands of contrasting design or color was not often seen before 1868. The house has a rear corner tower with a polygonal slate roof capped by wrought iron cresting. Ihe ornamental trim at the iront veranda and on the dormers has been well-preserved. I'he Farquhar House is an excellent example of the miniaturization of the Mansard style for small dwellings. This style is well-rep- resented in Newton Corner, particularly in the neighborhoods north of the Massachusetts Turnpike and Washington Street.
