SIGNIFICANCE The Bullard House retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. Despite alterations to the later parts of the house, it is still significant under Criterion C as embodying the distinctive characteristics of late First Period structural carpentry and interior planning. Built after c. 1710, it is a good example of the early eighteenth century continuation of exposed framing with quirk-beaded framing members.
It is unusual in its longitudinal second story summer beam, which may prove to be related to traditional common/principal rafter roofing system, (as exists here.) The house also continues the pattern of the non-integral leanto, (either original or added,) common to the previous century. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Isaac Bullard House appears today as a fully developed 'salt-box' with evenly fenestrated clapboard facade, central chimney and entrance, two windows at each story in both major end rooms and irregular fenestration lighting the ends of the leanto. The old chimney stack was removed and replaced by a smaller modern one in the 1930's, as were the front stairs, and the chimney bay opened to existing rooms. A modern one story screened porch has been added across the rear of the leanto, and a modern gabled addition added to the NE corner.
There is a small non-contributing garage to the NW of the house. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The First Period core of this house consists of the eastern rooms chimney bay; the western bay and the leanto are additions of the later 18th century, and do not have a decorated frame. The frame of the c.1710 house is quirk-beaded with runout stops on exposed front and rear plates as well as the summer at both floors. of the first story are 20 1/2 inches on centers, inae reomse de 17' across. The first floor chimney girt has a beveled chamfer with runout stop, and a beveled chamfer on the face in the entry hall. the leanto behind the main east room, the corner post is gunstocked. This, together with the evidence of a cellar suggests this may have an original narrow leanto extending from the chimney bay across the rear of the original house.
The most unusual aspect of the frame the longitudinal placement of both first and second story summer beams. the attic, the first four rafters of the oldest part of the roof display Roman numerals near the and pegged apex; the first is hidden by exterior clapboards, but "II," "IV" appear on the face of rafters set only 4' apart. In the cellar, the first floor of the main block is supported on large longitudinal sleepers and is deeper than that of the western addition.
There is a cellar under the eastern half of the leanto, with transverse sleepers, suggesting an early if not original date. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The roofing system on the west uses similar spacing in its common-rafter system; the rafters are joined at the apex by a diamond-shaped ridge pole into which the shaved ends of the rafters are pegged.
