What happened here

An account from the chapter on Muskingum township, in the words of 1882.

1882, Muskingum Township

Sabbath School In Early Times

Archibald McCann was very devoted to the welfare of the young people of his neighborhood, and on Sabbath gave his whole time to teaching ; opening school in the morning, and continuing all day - in studying the Bible. Mr. McCann was drowned in the canal at Zanesville, on the night of March 2gth, 1839. The drawbridge had been left open, and, the night being dark, he did not discover it, and, walking off, fell into the water.
